Citroën is further expanding its DS line. While the DS3 and DS4 stand out for their sportiness and extravagance, the larger DS5 is a technology carrier.
A.he Citroën also has its “retro”, its recourse to a glorious past. But in contrast to the VW Beetle, the French tradition is limited to the naming.
DS is intended to be a reminder of the legendary sedan of the 1960s, when Citroën was still independent and not part of the large corporation led by Peugeot.
After the small models DS3 and DS4, the big DS5 now celebrated its premiere at the auto show in Shanghai. Another "goddess" (German translation of De-esse) – or just a normal sporty station wagon?
Design Director Thierry Metroz explains: “All DS models are something special, unique in our model family. They are expressive, real eye-catchers and differ in shape and color from the high-volume models with the C in front of the number ".
This also applies to the DS5, which has nothing in common with the well-known C5. The mixture of station wagon and coupe with the sloping windshield, the tapering front triangular window, the flat sloping roof and the rather small tailgate should be the new, technical spearhead of the French.
This also applies to the cockpit, which the designers gave it to look like an airplane. After pressing the start button, information is mirrored in the windshield (head-up display), the control handle of the automatic is reminiscent of the thrust lever of an Airbus, and the switches on the center console also follow the airy model.
All in all, Citroën wants to close the gap that still exists with the German premium manufacturers in terms of materials, workmanship and appearance. At first glance, it seems to have succeeded.
While the smaller DS versions were quite clear offshoots of “civil” Citroën models, their big brother leads a life of its own. As the brand’s first model, it will also be available as a hybrid version.
This should achieve a standard consumption of just 3.7 liters per 100 kilometers and only blow 99 grams of CO2 into the air. The Hybrid4 system developed by the Peugeot parent company is taken over. A 163 hp diesel engine drives the front wheels.
A 37 HP electric motor is responsible for the rear pair of wheels. If all 200 "horses" work, the DS5 has a kind of all-wheel drive. It can travel around three kilometers at speeds of up to 50 km / h using purely electric power. Then the diesel switches on and charges the battery again.
The faster the DS5 is on the move, the less the electric motor supports the propulsion. From 120 km / h the sports suit is then a pure front-wheel drive. Disadvantage of the hybrid Citroën: By installing the battery, the luggage space shrinks from 467 to 325 liters – not exactly lush for a station wagon.
In addition to the hybrid, five other engine versions will be available from autumn: two petrol (156 or 200 hp) and two diesels (112 with automatic start-stop or 163 hp).
For its new top model, Citroën has also included various assistance systems in the price list. Whether lane keeping aid or automatic high beam – everything can be ordered now. The DS5 should also come to Germany in the fall, the prices have not yet been determined and will probably start at just under 30,000 euros. Well equipped, the new "goddess" should then cost around 35,000 euros.
The report from the trade fair in Shanghai was supported by Daimler AG.
