With the 4Motion, VW wants to give the cold shoulder to winter. Its standard consumption is less than five liters and it drives safely over ice and snow. Only its driving dynamics leave a lot to be desired.

NOnly a few months after its market launch, the Golf is now rolling out onto the streets as the 4Motion all-wheel drive version. With the new model variant, Volkswagen is continuing a tradition begun in 1986: The current all-wheel drive model also shows its subtle side and is indistinguishable from the front-wheel drive version.

The centerpiece of the all-wheel drive is a further developed Haldex coupling, which ensures a reasonable distribution of power between the two axles at all times. The center of gravity of the drive is sometimes at the front and sometimes at the rear, which is imperceptible to the driver and passengers, depending on the condition of the road surface and driving style. A control unit is responsible for the power distribution and constantly calculates the ideal drive torque for the rear axle and the power required for propulsion. Depending on requirements, up to 100 percent of the drive power can go to the rear axle.

In general, the term “permanent all-wheel drive” has to be redefined in the Golf 4Motion. Because initially the compact car is just a front-wheel drive that offers all-wheel drive in the background. The combination of the new Haldex clutch, electronics and multi-plate clutch on the rear axle works so quickly that Volkswagen is now talking about “predictive all-wheel drive”.

Numerous electrical helpers

Because before the motor has finally built up its torque, the electronics already know how much power is required where. Spinning wheels when you start quickly at traffic lights are a thing of the past. If a wheel does want to spin, the electronic differential locks (EDL) integrated in the ESP intervene in a fraction of a second and transfer the drive power to the opposite side.

The power of the drive is not only evident in snow and ice, but in many everyday driving situations. Thanks to the many electronic helpers, the journey with the 4Motion will soon be a rather unspectacular affair. Almost as if on rails, the Golf pulls through tight curves, masters the steepest approaches and does not allow itself to be disturbed by rapid maneuvers.

For fans of driving dynamics, this Golf is almost a disappointment. For all other motorists who want to get from A to B very safely, there is hardly anything better.

1900 kilos up to an eight percent gradient

The engine range of the 4Motion is manageable with two diesel units, there will be no offer for petrol enthusiasts due to a lack of demand. In addition to the basic 1.6 TDI (105 PS) engine, a 2.0 TDI (150 PS) with the power of four wheels is also available. The Golf with all-wheel drive and two-liter diesel is clearly out of the segment. Although the dimensions indicate that it is a compact model, the superior performance and appearance, as well as the background noise in the interior, even when driving quickly on the motorway, place this Golf in a higher class. Nobody really needs more cars.

Despite the additional weight due to the all-wheel drive (plus 100 kilos), the two models consume 4.5 and 4.7 liters less than their predecessors. The two-liter undercuts the previous model by 15 percent despite the ten horsepower increase and, according to VW, is the most economical all-wheel drive in the world. But it is also a powerful towing vehicle. The 4Motion 1900 can pull up to eight percent incline and 1700 kilograms up to twelve percent. The value of the predecessor was 1500 kilos.

The all-wheel-drive Golf rolls to dealers in the three well-known equipment versions Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The basic equipment includes, among other things, air conditioning and an on-board computer. In addition to drowsiness detection, Comfortline also features parking assistance and 16-inch alloy wheels. Highline also offers a multifunction steering wheel, 17-inch wheels, sports seats and xenon headlights. The price list starts at 23,485 euros for the 1.6 TDI and at 28,035 euros for the 2.0 TDI.
