A range of up to 522 kilometers sounds good. What does the reality say?

The ID offensive VW has picked up speed: little by little, all digits are occupied. During the ID.3 played a pioneering role for the brand, but is mainly intended to score points in Europe, the ID.4 is rolling at the start under global auspices.

The electric SUV should also find its fans in important markets such as the USA and China. Can the ID.4 meet the high expectations in everyday life??

Then let's see what VW has put in front of our door: An ID.4 Pro Performance Max 77 kWh in "Glacier White Metallic Black" (surcharge 660 euros). We'll get to the technology later, just so much: Until the GTX is launched on the market this is the strongest ID.4 with the greatest range.

Big gives me the perfect cue. 4.58 meters in length are not exaggerated, but with the width, the ID.4 is 1.85 meters without exterior mirrors. You have to be careful, the narrower the street, the right lane is recommended for motorway construction sites. As strange as it may sound, the ID.4 is almost too spacious inside. Even I feel a little lost in the driver's seat at 1.88 meters.

Perhaps the functional design both inside and out reinforces the feeling of passivity. Exciting or even emotional here is little, the ID.4 has (Sorry, VW) the look of a washing machine. In my opinion, the cockpit has been reduced too radically. Certainly not as much as with the Tesla Model 3 (and Y), but I still feel more like a passenger than a driver.

In addition, there is the contradiction that operation has become all the more difficult despite the maximum absence of real buttons. VW wanted to simplify operation, but achieved exactly the opposite. You constantly have to search the touchscreen, the logic of which is not the yellow of the egg. One thing is certain: in the technically related Audi Q4 e-tron the driver feels that he is in better hands.

The ID.4 also has its sunny side: the appearance of the material has been significantly improved compared to the ID.3, synthetic leather enhances the dashboard. Nevertheless, there is still scope for a model upgrade in the distant future. The absolute highlight is the unbelievable amount of space in the ID.4: a wheelbase of almost 2.77 meters provides enormous legroom in the rear and at least 543 liters of luggage space. Clearly: this is the ID. for families.

As mentioned at the beginning, a short word about the drives: Only the ID.4 GTX has all-wheel drive by means of two electric motors. Otherwise, rear-wheel drive is standard. It starts with 109 kW (148 PS), followed by 125 kW (170 PS). Battery: 52 kWh, range up to 346 kilometers.

The 170 PS machine is also available with the large 77 kWh battery (always net capacity), which the "large" ID.4 with 150 kW (204 PS), like our test car, always has in the ground. According to VW, the "Pro Performance Max" should create up to 522 kilometers. Depending on the variant, a charging capacity of up to 125 kW is possible, with a maximum of 170 kW in 2021.

As far as the theory goes, we come to practice: Emotionally, the ID.4 may have something of a tram, but on the autobahn it is definitely an express train. 8.5 seconds to 100 km / h feels subjectively faster, also because 310 Newton meters of torque are available right away. However, the Pro Performance also weighs over 2.1 tons when empty.

The degree of recuperation cannot be set manually in gear position "B", but VW has found a pleasant middle ground. One-pedal driving to a standstill is not possible. The optional 21-inch rims (1,690 euros) appear to us to be dispensable, with them the ID.4 rolls a track too tight.

Up to this point, the ID.4 has proven to be a good mix for everyone with a need for space. We determined the consumption to be between 15.2 and 19.7 kWh on average; when driving quickly on the motorway, it was 21.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. Extrapolated, a range of between 506 and 363 kilometers would be possible.

But what does the moment of truth say when it comes to charging? We start with 35 percent rest and 74 kW charging power at the HPC connection. A full charge would take 60 minutes. Here is an overview of the other charging services:

Battery level Charging power
49 percent 66 kW
76 percent 53.4 kW
80 percent 51 kW
88 percent 37.5 kW
91 percent 35 kW

4 still draws electricity well towards the end, as with all electric cars it only gets tough when the battery level is 95 percent. We break off and look at the cockpit display behind the steering wheel: there are 412 kilometers there.

And what does our ID.4 cost without premiums, as you can see in the pictures? Without extras 58,820 euros, with extras 61,960 euros. The people must first have money for their car. Just for comparison: A Hyundai Ioniq 5 of the same size with all-wheel drive, a good 73 kWh battery, 225 kW (305 PS) and full equipment (!) is 62,350 euros. In return, you get a great design and incredible charging performance.

The VW ID.4 also has enough competition on its neck within its own group: the Audi Q4 e-tron is a bit more expensive, but of higher quality on the inside and much easier to use. A comparable Skoda Enyaq iV however, costs a few thousand euros less. here see a comparison of the trio.

Conclusion:

VW has made an effort with the ID.4, for example with the materials in the interior. Consumption and range are okay, the heavy weight, as is the case with many electric cars, is not. Nevertheless, Wolfsburg should quickly improve the maximum charging capacity because the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 sets the benchmark here.

And not only the Ioniq 5 is dangerous to the ID.4. Unlike the ID.3, there are attractive sister models from Audi and Skoda, both of which have their own charm. So why is it mandatory to have a VW ID.4? Some customers may reply: Because they are the VW.
