Van Hool, a Belgian manufacturer of buses, coaches and commercial vehicles, has built the world’s first 100 percent battery electric double-decker coach: the TDX25E. The vehicle can accommodate 69 passengers (18 under deck and 51 above deck) and has a range of up to 500 km depending on the weather conditions and route. The TDX25E is intended for the North American market, where he should be used primarily for commuting workers and / or regular passports.
Overall, the Belgians have already built more than 1200 vehicles with electric drive (hydrogen, overhead line, battery, hybrid). Exactly a year ago, Van Hool has already begun to deliver one-storey CX45E coach covers to the USA. Now follow the biplane. Both the CX45E as well as the brand new TDX25E use electric (main) components such as a powertrain of Siemens and Protertra batteries.
“The American customers were very enthusiastic about the driving experience of our first battery electric bus, the CX45E,. So we have quickly made work and developed a battery-electric biplane that has a higher passenger capacity. The experiences that we have collected in the past with electric drives and recently with the CX45E have helped us in the fast development and extensive tests of the latest van-hool double decker, the TDX25E, very much.”- Filip Van Hool, CEO Van Hool
Regardless of the drive type are already more than 11.000 travel and buses from Van Hool on American roads on the road, including a series of large companies in Silicon Valley, organizing shuttle services for own employees, and for many other customers. Due to the demand of some customers after vehicles with a purely electric drive, Van Hool has searched for solutions for this purpose and now also on offer, so CEO Filip Van Hool. The company that in the coming year is its 75. Anniversary celebrates, employs more than 3500 people worldwide, most of them at the production sites in Koningshooikt (Belgium) and Skopje (Nordmasedonia).

Despite the possible selection “Hydrogen, …, Battery, Hybrid”, the manufacturer has decided on the TDX25E model for battery electrically, which certainly has its reason in favorable operating costs.
Apparently, there are no advantages of hydrogen at buses for ranges up to 500 km and when the energy densities in batteries are increased in the future, then the battery electric ranges are increasing.
