Plugged in: The range of vehicles with plug-in hybrid drives is growing
Source: BMW Group
A mass phenomenon with fuel and electricity: It’s not quite that far yet, but the number of hybrid cars on the streets that can be charged from a socket is growing with the supply. A market overview.
W.hat cars like the BMW X5, the VW Passat and the Mercedes C-Class have in common? The otherwise very different cars are all available with a power socket and combustion engine – they are vehicles with plug-in hybrid drives.
A few years ago, when traveling with fuel and electricity, drivers were still an exception in road traffic. This is no longer the case, and the plug-in hybrids are about to overtake all-electric cars in terms of numbers.
According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the number of new registrations rose by 145 percent last year compared to 2014 (plus 11,101 vehicles). For the first time, almost as many plug-in hybrids were brought onto the market as classic electric cars (12,363 units, up 45 percent). A year ago, the plug-in hybrids only reached half of the number of electric cars sold.
One of the reasons for this development is the flood of new plug-in hybrid models that came onto the market in 2015. If one believes prognoses, it is above all this type of drive that will gain in importance in the coming years – less fuel-thirsty compared to pure combustion engines, no range problem as with pure electric vehicles. These models are currently available on the German market:
Audi A3 Sportback e-tron
In combination, the petrol and electric motor in the Ingolstadt compact model produce 204 hp, while Audi specifies the standard consumption of 1.5 liters per 100 kilometers (CO2 emissions: 35 g / km). The compact drives up to 50 kilometers purely electrically, with up to 102 hp and up to 130 km / h. Afterwards, or when the driver fully depresses the accelerator pedal, as well as in other driving modes, the 1.4-liter turbo gasoline engine provides support with 150 hp. In sport mode, the compact sprints to 100 km / h in 7.6 seconds and reaches a maximum of 222 km / h.

Audi Q7 e-tron
The luxury SUV from Audi with plug-in hybrid and permanent all-wheel drive can be ordered in a few weeks. A 3.0-liter V6 diesel (258 hp) and an electric motor (128 hp) are combined. The system output is 373 hp, the maximum torque 700 Newton meters (Nm). The electric range gives Audi with up to 56 kilometers, the consumption with 1.8 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. The other digits: 6.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h, 225 km / h top speed. The Q7 as a plug-in costs a whopping 80,500 euros.

BMW i8
At BMW, the BMW i sub-brand has been gaining experience with electrified drives for a number of years. In the i8 sports car, the manufacturer combines a three-cylinder, just 1.5 liter, transversely installed on the rear axle (231 hp) with the electric unit on the front axle (131 hp). Thanks to its lightweight carbon construction, the futuristic 2 + 2-seater weighs only 1485 kilograms, has 362 hp and, at least in the standard cycle, achieves a consumption of 2.1 liters.

BMW X5 xDrive40e
The luxury SUV, which costs at least 69,200 euros, consumes an average of 3.3 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers, according to BMW. The X5 is powered by the combination of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 245 hp and a 113 hp electric motor. The eight-speed automatic distributes the system output of 313 hp to all four wheels. The two-ton truck accelerates from standstill to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds. The X5 can drive 31 kilometers purely electrically, with a top speed of 120 km / h.

BMW 330e
In the recently revised model series, a 184 hp petrol engine and an electric motor (88 hp) integrated into the eight-speed automatic are combined. The system output of 252 hp is transferred to the rear wheels. The 330e (from 43,500 euros) accelerates to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds, with a maximum possible 225 km / h. Because the battery is integrated above the rear axle, the trunk volume remains unaffected. BMW specifies the average consumption at 1.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

BMW 225xe Active Tourer
In the plug-in hybrid version of the compact van, the engineers have combined the electrical engineering with a three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine installed transversely at the front. The combustion engine drives the front wheels, the power of the electric motor goes to the rear axle – similar to the i8. In sport mode, both drives together produce 224 hp. According to BMW, the 225xe (from 38,700 euros) has a standard consumption of 2.1 liters. The battery, which has enough power for 41 kilometers of electric driving, is housed in the compact van under the rear seat bench.

BMW 740e iPerformance
The BMW 7 Series with twin-heart drive, which will be available in the summer, should also consume 2.1 liters per 100 kilometers. The car (from 91,900 euros) is powered by a combination of a four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine (258 hp) and an electric motor (113 hp). Together they have a system output of 326 hp. As with the 330e, the electric unit is integrated into the eight-speed automatic. The storage capacity of the battery under the rear bench seat is sufficient for 40 kilometers. After 5.6 seconds, the flagship is up to 100 thanks to the electric punch.

Mercedes C 350 e
The socket E-Class costs from 51,050 euros, the corresponding T-model from 52,700 euros. In the vehicles, the 2.0-liter petrol engine (211 hp) familiar from the C 250 and a 109 hp electric motor do common things (system output: 279 hp, 600 Newton meters of torque). The electrified C-Class sprints to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds and to a maximum of 250 km / h. Full of juice, the battery lasts up to 31 kilometers for purely electric driving. Mercedes specifies the standard consumption at 2.1 liters.

Mercedes GLE 500 e 4matic
With a plug-in hybrid drive, the GLE is in the price list for 74,200 euros. The socket SUV combines a 333 hp V6 petrol engine and an electric motor with 116 hp (system power: 442 hp / torque 650 Nm). The big car accelerates to 100 km / h in 5.3 seconds, and the 2.5-ton truck can reach speeds of up to 245 km / h. The combined consumption is 3.3 liters.

Mercedes S 500 plug-in hybrid
Most of the time, Mercedes sells the battery version for the same price as the eight-cylinder S-Class: for 108,944 euros. In the S 500 plug-in hybrid, a 3.0 V6 biturbo (333 hp) cooperates with an electric motor that produces 116 hp. With a system output of 442 hp and 650 Newton meters, the performance is impressive: from a standstill to 100 km / h, the sedan is in 5.2 seconds. While purely electric is on the road at 140 km / h, it goes on with the help of the combustion engine up to 250 km / h. Mercedes specifies 33 kilometers of purely electric range and a standard consumption of 2.8 liters.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
The Outlander with socket costs from 39,990 euros and, after its facelift in 2015, is visually more different from the conventionally powered versions. The mid-range SUV relies on the combination of an electric all-wheel drive system and hybrid drive. A 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 121 hp and an 82 hp electric motor are used on the front axle. An electric unit for the rear axle with 82 hp completes the drive train. The battery capacity allows up to 52 kilometers of purely electric travel. The standard consumption is 1.9 liters. The Outlander does the standard sprint in 11 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km / h.

Volvo XC90 T8 twin engine
In the new Swedish luxury SUV, the top model is not powered by a large-volume internal combustion engine, but by a plug-in hybrid system with 400 hp. In terms of performance, the combination of the turbo and supercharged four-cylinder with 320 hp and the 80 hp electric motor, which costs from 76,160 euros, significantly outperforms the old V8 petrol engine. The plug-in SUV rushes from zero to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds and can go up to 230 km / h. The manufacturer specifies the consumption as 2.5 liters per 100 km. Because the gasoline engine is on the front axle and the electric motor on the rear axle, the motors work together to form an all-wheel drive at the push of a button.

Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid
The V60 plug-in hybrid has been on the market for a long time. The mid-range station wagon was the first vehicle to combine diesel (215 hp) and electric motors (68 hp). Depending on the selected driving mode, they share the drive work or move the V60 plug-in hybrid alone. Together they come to 206 kW / 283 PS and accelerate the two-tonner from a standstill to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds, with a maximum of 230 km / h. The plug-in hybrid is supposed to create up to 50 kilometers purely electrically, the average consumption per 100 kilometers is given as 1.8 liters.

VW Golf GTE
In the Golf GTE (from 36,900 euros), a 1.4-liter turbo engine with 150 hp is used as a petrol engine, the electric motor housed in the housing of the six-speed dual clutch gearbox generates 102 hp and allows a top speed of 130 km / h, 217 km / h are possible. Together the engines produce 204 hp. Electrically, the Golf GTE should be able to cover around 50 kilometers before the combustion engine kicks in or the Golf has to be plugged in. In theory, only 1.5 liters of petrol are required over the standard distance of 100 kilometers.
