Now Cupra, Hyundai and Alfa have also made statements about the combustion engine
One car manufacturer after the other is switching to electric drive. Most recently, in September 2021, Cupra and Hyundai were added with specific statements about the combustion engine phase-out. Before that, we completely updated and expanded the overview (which we created in March) in June 2021.
At that time we added the brands Mini, Fiat, Audi, VW, Honda, Opel and, most recently, Alfa Romeo.
In view of the ever stricter regulations on pollutant emissions, the motto is: adapt or disappear. The choice is not difficult. In Europe, the decision of the EU Commission is sitting on the manufacturers' necks that there will be no more combustion engines in Europe from 2025. Even if this has yet to be confirmed by the governments and parliaments: A statutory combustion engine ban in the EU is quite likely due to the Union's CO2 targets.
We have put together the car manufacturers who have already switched completely to electric drive and those for whom the transition is taking place gradually or a date has already been set. The spectrum ranges from smart about Ford up to Alpine and Bentley.
Brand boss Griffith: Cupra will be a purely electronic brand from 2030
Hyundai does not want to offer any more combustion engines in Europe from 2035
In general, caution is advised with the sometimes waxy formulations. Sometimes they start with "We have the ambition …" or "If market conditions allow …"
A distinction must also be made as to whether a brand no longer wants to bring new models with combustion engines onto the market after a certain year or whether it no longer wants to sell combustion engines at all.
In addition, a phrase a la "no more combustion engines" sometimes also means: no more pure combustion engines, while plug-in hybrids, hybrids or even mild hybrids are still to be offered.
Our overview currently includes almost 30 brands, but there are still some who do not want to commit themselves. We are excited to see how things will continue and will keep the photo series up to date.
