The seasonal license plate makes life easier for convertible and classic car drivers. Its popularity is increasing.
S.P-X / Flensburg. The time-limited registration of motor vehicles is enjoying increasing popularity. The number of cars, motorcycles and trailers with seasonal license plates has increased by 1.4 percent compared to the previous year to around 2.52 million, as the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has now announced. The cut-off date is January 1st.
The largest group of seasonal license plate holders are still the motorcycles. 1.36 million bikes are registered during the season and deregistered in winter. There are also around 983,000 cars, the majority (441,000 units) being convertibles and mobile homes (147,000 units). The other models are likely to be collector’s vehicles that are protected in winter. Even so-called "winter cars" by two-wheelers are often registered with seasonal license plates. Around 44 percent of all seasonal license plates are issued for seven months, and almost 33 percent for eight months. Shorter and longer periods of time only play a subordinate role.
The seasonal license was introduced on March 1, 1997. Vehicles with a corresponding registration may not be moved or parked in public traffic outside of the period indicated on the license plate. At the end of the rest period, the vehicle can be used again without registration formalities.
