Hyundai has revised the i30. The drive in particular benefits from the facelift: it now works with mild hybrid technology.

The revised Hyundai i30.

It’s not easy for anyone who wants to gain a foothold in the compact class; After all, the VW Golf is the measure of all things here.

With the Hyundai i30, however, the Korean manufacturer has a very attractive model on offer, for which the then VW boss Martin Winterkorn of all people did the best advertising. During a tour of the fair at the IAA in Frankfurt, he and his board colleagues examined the then new second generation of the i30. “Nothing rattles there,” the VW boss found during his quality control – and asked the group why they couldn’t do it at VW. The processing quality is also impeccable in the now revised third generation of the i30, both outside and inside. The i30 continues to impress with its solid design and a new 10.25-inch touchscreen system, on which Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can now also be displayed wirelessly.

In addition, Hyundai has given the i30 a slight visual refresh with a new radiator grille, new front and rear lights in LED technology and new bumpers. But the biggest innovation is under the hood of the compact. Only petrol and diesel engines with mild hybrid support are now used there. The system, which operates on a 48-volt network, can recover braking energy and assist the engine in accelerating via the starter generator. In addition, the 48-volt electrical system keeps the steering and brakes running when the engine is switched off when coasting to save fuel. In the tested 1.5-liter petrol engine with 160 hp and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (from CHF 30,800), the drive with direct throttle response and even torque is pleasing; that goes well with the comfortably shifting transmission and the well-balanced chassis.

This makes the i30 look comfortable even on long journeys, while retaining enough maneuverability for the city. Hyundai states the consumption as 6.3 l/100 km. In the test it was 6.8 l/100 km – whereby the compact also had to unwind a lot of city traffic.
