Smart EQ Fortwo

The smallest "real" electric car (above miniature vehicles a la Opel Rocks-e or e.Go Life) is the Smart EQ Fortwo. Only 2.70 meters long, the two-seater is mainly suitable for the city. Because not only the external dimensions are small, but also the electric motor with 41 kW continuous output, and above all the battery.

More than 160 kilometers are not possible with one charge. Nevertheless, the prices start at a proud 22,000 euros. A Dacia Spring is significantly cheaper and offers "more car for the money", but of course the Smart is easier to park. Charging is so quick with the optional 22 kW on-board charger that the lack of direct current charging is easy to get over: it only takes 40 minutes (10-80 percent). Another advantage: there is also a convertible version.

  • Base price: 21,940 euros (coupe) or 25,200 euros (convertible)
  • Drive: synchronous motor with 60 kW (peak power), 41 kW continuous power and 160 Nm
  • Battery / range: 18 kWh / range: 159 km (NEDC)
  • Charging: 4.6 kW AC, optional 22 kW AC (990 euros), no DC charging
  • Dimensions: 2.70 m length / 1.56 m height
  • Trunk: 260-350 liter
  • Market opening: January 2020 (facelift)
  • As of December 23, 2021

Smart EQ Forfour

The Smart EQ Forfour was the five-door version of the Fortwo. The drive was the same as there, but the 3.50 meter long trolley had space for four people and the trunk, with up to 975 liters, is also significantly larger than that of the Fortwo, which can hold a maximum of 350 liters of luggage.

The prices are only a few hundred euros higher than the Fortwo. In view of the practical added value, that’s little money. However, it is easier to park and turn around with the Fortwo. The car has not been included in the price list since December 2021, production has ended.

  • Base price: 22,600 euros (no longer available)
  • Drive: synchronous motor with 60 kW peak power, 41 kW continuous power and 160 Nm
  • Battery / range: 18 kWh / 153 km (NEDC)
  • Charging: 4.6 kW AC, optional 22 kW AC (990 euros), no DC charging
  • Length: 3.50 meters
  • Trunk: 185-975 liters
  • Market opening: January 2020 (facelift)
  • As of December 22, 2021

Renault Twingo Electric

The Elektro-Twingo shares the platform with the Smart EQ Forfour. The technical data are also similar. The peak power of 60 kW is identical, but the battery with 22 kWh net is slightly larger. 190 kilometers in the WLTP cycle should be possible here. That is noticeably more than the 153 km according to NEDC for the Smart. It is charged with up to 22 kW alternating current.

Unlike the Smart, which has been on the market for what feels like an eternity, the Twingo Electric is only just starting. At first you could only order a well-equipped special model called Vibes, but at the end of February Renault will introduce two normal versions, bringing the base price to around one Thousands falls to around 24,000 euros, of which 14,000 euros remain after funding. A version for around 22,000 euros has also been announced.

  • Base price: 24,790 euros (Zen equipment, with 19% VAT)
  • Drive: separately excited synchronous motor at the rear with 60 kW (82 PS) and 160 Nm
  • 0-100 km / h top speed: 12.9 seconds / 135 km / h
  • Battery / range: 22 kWh / 190 km WLTP
  • Charging: up to 22 kW AC, no DC charging
  • Length: 3.62 meters
  • Trunk: 174-980 liters
  • Market launch: early 2021

Seat Mii electric

At least one tiny electric vehicle from the VW group is back: After the car (like the practically identical models VW e-Up and Skoda Citigo e iV) disappeared from the scene in 2020, the Seat Mii electric is now back – as a well-equipped special edition Power Charge for just under 25,000 euros.

With a range of around 250 km, the car does not come as far as the Fiat 500 e with the large 42 kWh battery (320 km), but it does significantly further than the Renault Twingo Electric (190 km). Charging is carried out with up to 7.2 kW AC, and direct current charging is also possible as standard – while the CCS charging connection cost a surcharge of 600 euros in the end.

  • Base price: 24,650 euros (Edition Power Charge, with 19% VAT)
  • Drive: Permanent magnet synchronous machine with 61 kW and 212 Nm
  • Battery / range: 32 kWh gross / 251 km WLTP
  • Charging: 7.2 kW AC, 40 kW DC
  • Length: 3.56 meters
  • Trunk: 251-923 liters
  • Market opening: probably February 2021
  • As of January 29, 2021

Fiat 500 e

The third generation of the Fiat 500 comes on the market as an electric car. As it should be with a new generation, the platform is new, and so the car is six centimeters longer than before. The two-part headlights are one of the visual characteristics of the new version.

There are two drives. The basic variant with a 24 kWh battery (gross) is supposed to do 180 km according to WLTP and has a 70 kW motor (95 PS). The other versions have a 42 kWh battery (gross) and achieve 320 WLTP kilometers; they are also more powerful with 87 kW (118 hp). The prices start at 23,560 euros with 19% VAT. The new 500 Elektro 3 + 1 with a small additional door on the passenger side is available from 29,560 euros with 19% VAT.

  • Base price: 23,560 euros (70 kW and 24 kWh, Action equipment, with 19% VAT)
  • Drive: 1 electric motor at the front with 70 kW (85 PS) or 87 kW (118 PS)
  • Range: 180 or 320 km (WLTP)
  • Charging: up to 11 kW AC, up to 85 kW DC

Renault Zoe

The Renault Zoe, which was launched in 2013, was the most popular electric car in Germany and Europe in 2020. This will have contributed to the fact that, since the generation change at the end of 2019, there has been a top version called the R135 Z.E. 50 with 100 kW (135 PS) and a 52 kWh battery that promises an impressive 385 kilometers range. In addition, you can now charge the Zoe with direct current (up to 50 kW) for the first time, with alternating current 22 kW are possible.

In terms of performance and battery, the top Zoe is very similar to its ore competitor Peugeot e-208, but it can charge faster. In terms of price, both are on the same level. The option to rent batteries at the Zoe was no longer available on January 1st. The prices now start at around 30,000 euros (R110 Z.E. 40 with 316 kilometers WLTP range), the R135 Z.E. 50 are available from 33,900 euros.

  • Base price: 29,990 euros (R110 Z.E. 41 kWh, 80 kW, Life equipment)
  • Drive: Separately excited electric machine (FSM) at the front with 80 or 100 kW peak power
  • Battery: 41 kWh or 52 kWh gross
  • Range: 316 km WLTP (R110 Z.E. 40) / 395 km (R110 Z.E. 50) / 386 km (R135 Z.E. 50)
  • Charging: up to 22 kW AC, up to 50 kW DC
  • Length: 4.09 meters
  • Trunk: 338-1,225 liters
  • Market opening: end of 2019 (second generation)
  • As of January 20, 2021

Peugeot e-208

The Peugeot e-208 with 100 kW of power and a 50 kWh battery and a length of 4.06 meters is the natural competitor of the Renault Zoe R135 Z.E. 50. The price is also similar.

However, Peugeot does not charge with 22 kW, but only with 11 kW alternating current. In addition, the Zoe has more trunk space. In our opinion, however, speaks for the Peugeot because of its much more stylish look.

  • Base price: 30,450 euros (Active equipment)
  • Drive: E-motor with 100 kW (136 PS) and 260 Nm
  • 0-100 km / h: 8.1 seconds.
  • Range: 340 km WLTP
  • Charging: up to 11 kW AC, up to 100 kW DC
  • Length: 4.06 meters
  • Trunk: 265-960 liters
  • Market opening: January 25, 2020

Opel Corsa-e

What is the difference between the Peugeot e-208 and the Opel Corsa-e? Two things, the position of the "e" and the color: the Peugeot is blue, the Opel is orange. No, of course the Corsa is not always painted in the launch color, we are showing it here in gray. The drive and platform (EMP1) are the same as on the Peugeot.

But the designers have optically designed the Corsa significantly different from the 208, and in our opinion it is also handsome. The twins also differ significantly inside: The Peugeot has a larger instrument display with a sophisticated 3D look, the Opel is more conservative.

  • Base price: 29,900 euros (Corsa equipment, with 19% VAT)
  • Drive: An electric motor with 100 kW / 136 PS at the front
  • Battery / range: 50 kWh / 337 km (WLTP)

Mini Cooper SE (Facelift)

At 3.85 meters, the electrically powered Mini is around 20 centimeters shorter than the Peugeot e-208 and the Opel Corsa-e. In this respect, it is no wonder that the trunk with 211-731 liters is not exactly huge. In terms of size, the Cooper SE is more suitable for the Honda e than the models mentioned. Unlike the Honda, the Mini only has three doors – not very practical.

The engine output of 135 kW (184 PS) is impressive, it is on the level of a Cooper S. But the range of 270 kilometers according to NEDC (the certainly much smaller WLTP value is not specified) is not exactly great. Prices start at 32,500 euros. Nothing has changed in this regard or in the technical data during the facelift shown above. The new version will be available from March.

  • Base price: 32,500 euros
  • Drive: hybrid synchronous motor with 135 kW and 270 Nm
  • 0-100 km / h: 7.3 seconds.
  • Top speed: 150 km / h
  • Battery / range: 29 kWh net / 270 km NEDC
  • Charging: up to 11 kW AC, up to 50 kW DC
  • Length: 3.85 meters
  • Trunk: 211-731 liters
  • Market opening: March 2021

Honda-e

At 3.89 meters, the Honda e is smaller than most small cars. Two versions with 100 and 113 kW are offered; so the tiny is well motorized. Both versions have the same 36 kWh battery, which is apparently the gross capacity.

The battery capacity is therefore significantly lower than that of the PSA models, which have a 50 kWh battery. The range is also small: 220 kilometers according to WLTP are 100 km less than with PSA. The AC charging speed (6.6 kW) is also slow. The strength of the Honda e is the look, which is really successful. The noble interior with the large displays is also impressive. The prices are steep; they start at around 34,000 euros.

  • Base price: 33,850 euros (100 kW) or 38,000 euros (113 kW)
  • Drive: 1 rear electric motor with 100 kW or 113 kW and 315 Nm (both)
  • 0-100 km / h / Vmax: 0.0 or 8.3 seconds / 145 km / h (both)
  • Range: 210-220 km (WLTP)
  • Charging: up to 6.6 kW AC, up to 56 kW DC
  • Length: 3.89 meters
  • Doors / seats: 5/4
  • Trunk: 171-861 liters
  • Market opening: early 2020

BMW i3

The second electric car from the BMW Group (or in terms of time: the first, because the i3 has been available since 2013) is the i3. At 4.01 meters, it is significantly longer than the Mini, plus the van-like body.

As with the Mini, the power of the electric motor is generous: the i3 has 125 kW (170 hp), while the i3s with 135 kW (184 hp) is just as powerful as the mini. However, the rated power is much lower and the specified torque of 149 Nm is also low. In return, the WLTP range of 307 km is decent, similar to that of the Peugeot e-208. Prices start at 39,000 euros.

  • Base price: 39,000 euros (i3)
  • Drive: 1 rear electric motor with 125 kW (170 PS) peak power, 75 kW (102 PS) rated power and 149 Nm (i3)
  • 0-100 km / h: 7.3 seconds (i3)
  • Top speed: 150 km / h (i3)
  • Battery / range: 37.9 kWh net / 359 km (NEDC), 307 km (WLTP) (i3)
  • Length: 4.01 meters
  • Trunk: 260-1,100 liters

Renault 5 (expected from 2023)

Another study is the Renault 5, which was recently presented at the Renaulution press conference. The roadmap presented by Renault suggests that the car will hit the market in 2023 and enter the B segment. Neither is officially confirmed.

There is also no data on the new model yet. To us the car looks pretty small, we estimate it to be 3.80 to 3.90 meters. This would make the car compete against the Honda e. The Renault is just as chic as the Honda, but the prices should be attractive for a large number of customers, as the French promise. In any case, the new R5 is not supposed to replace the Zoe; That’s what the chief designer said recently.

Somehow it is always the new ideas that inspire us intellectually. Most recently, this was achieved with the Renault 5, which the French presented at a remarkable press conference on January 14, 2021. We are taking the car as an occasion for a market overview of the small electric cars currently available. In other words: This overview contains the competitors of the new R5.

The normal hatchback models of the B-segment are included, i.e. no small SUVs like the upcoming Dacia Spring, the Opel Mokka-e or the Peugeot e-2008. We have added the small cars (A segment) such as the Renault Twingo and the Fiat 500 e. The larger compact cars (C-segment) a la VW ID.3 or Citroen e-C4 remain excluded.

We will then continuously expand the photo series so that you always have an overview of the current offer. Most recently, we added the mini facelift and the Seat Mii electric, resurrected from the dead.
