On the road in an e-car in ice and snow: where can you find electricity?

There is electricity almost everywhere

Especially in winter, as an e-car driver, you depend on a functioning infrastructure – even in remote areas.

Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo.

Just in time for the onset of winter, I was on the road purely electrically. A photo shoot in the first big snow of the year was planned.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo proved to be an extremely reliable partner even – or especially – on the snow-covered, partially icy side roads in the Emmental and Entlebuch. Rear-axle steering and air suspension with increased ground clearance provided the necessary manoeuvrability, while fresh winter tires and the sensitively controlled electric all-wheel drive provided the desired propulsion. The electric drive is even impressive when braking: the recuperation decelerates very evenly and with sufficient force so that you can come to a safe standstill even without the mechanical brake – and still recover energy at the same time. Nevertheless, consumption increases significantly due to the higher rolling resistance and the low temperatures. The on-board computer shows 28 kWh/100 km, which means that almost 300 kilometers are still possible. In Trubschachen in the Emmental we therefore head for a charging station with 45 kilometers left in the battery, with a charging capacity of 50 kW there would be a range of almost 200 kilometers per hour – or enough for the way home during a coffee break. Only: The Christmas market, which is currently being set up, is blocking the charging station. An uncomfortable starting position, but which ultimately shows that electricity is available almost everywhere. In nearby Escholzmatt there are several options – but only with 22 kW charging power. This means that the car has a range of around 1.5 kilometers per minute – which of course does not mean that we are forced to take an hour-long break. After 15 minutes there is enough power in the battery to make it safely to the "High Power" charging station in Lucerne-Neuenkirch, which is on the way home anyway. Here the Taycan can use its full charging capacity of 270 kW, and the battery is 80 percent full again after just 20 minutes. The first 100 kilometers of range are in the car after just under 5 minutes. You don't need to be afraid of getting stranded, even in winter. However, navigation systems and apps are helpful for finding electricity. Almost everywhere!
