So far, the A8 has had a difficult time against the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes S-Class. But that could change with the new generation: The luxury liner meets all the high-flying demands between aluminum and piano lacquer – from the sporty 372 hp drive to the economical Six liter consumption.

S.You have the most ambitious plans and think you are on the way to becoming the most successful premium manufacturer in the world. But in the upper class of all places, the Lords of the Rings are still lagging behind. Because even if the luxury sedans from Ingolstadt have moved closer to the Mercedes S-Class and the BMW 7 from generation to generation, the A8 could not catch up with the competition, at least in terms of numbers. In the third attempt, the Bavarians want to finally change that and are therefore completely planning the storm on the House of Lords.

When the new A8 is launched at the end of March at prices from 89,300 euros, the CEO and other executives will therefore have a good look around, predicts the VW subsidiary: "This car embodies everything that Audi can do and what makes Audi," says CEO Rupert Stadler with a view to the technology, elegance and efficiency of the luxury liner. No other car in this class is as sporty, none as efficient and none as modern.

So the Bavarians’ mouths are pretty full. But with the new A8 they actually achieved a great success. The sedan is more economical and yet sportier than ever, it offers more luxury and comfort, and is full of new technology. And it has grown noticeably: A wheelbase of 2.99 meters and a length of 5.14 meters make the A8 the longest Lulatsch in the upper house, even without the long version. Only the design is considered interchangeable by many critics – at least during the day. At night, on the other hand, the A8 can be immediately distinguished from any other model thanks to the full LED headlights and its distinctive rear lights, which were used for the first time in large-scale production.

Thanks to the Audi “Drive Select”, the car can be rounded so sportily in spite of its feudal format modify the optional dynamic steering. Just a dignified glider for long-distance journeys in the left lane, the A8 almost becomes a sports car that shakes off at least a few of its hundredweight and suddenly hurries almost nimbly across the country road.

Initially, two V8 engines, both of which are familiar from the predecessor, get it going. However, both the 4.2 FSI and the 4.2 TDI have been revised for the generation change and now offer more power with less consumption. The petrol engine starts at 83,900 euros and lures with 372 hp and 445 Nm, so it manages the sprint in 5.7 seconds, has no problems with the self-selected limit of 250 km / h and is exemplary clean. After all, the standard consumption goes down by 1.4 to 9.5 liters despite 22 HP more power.

Even more impressive, however, is the diesel, which is on the list at 90,800 euros. It now has 350 hp and makes a big jump in torque from 150 to an impressive 800 Nm. Without batting an eyelid, it slips to 100 km / h in 5.5 seconds and still follows similar savings goals: Its consumption is even reduced by 1.8 to 7.6 liters and makes it the only V8 at 199 g / km -Diesel in this league that stays below 200 g / km.

The pride and joy in terms of economy, however, is the new V6 TDI, which comes shortly after the market launch and initially pushes the price down to 72,200 euros. It remains at three liters of displacement, but its output climbs to 250 hp and the maximum torque now reaches 550 Nm, which means that 6.6 seconds are feasible and 250 km / h are also guaranteed. Because Audi has combined the engine with an automatic start-stop system for the first time in this segment and has also turned all other savings, consumption has fallen by 1.9 to 6.6 liters and makes the competitors drunk.

And that’s not even the end of the story. Because later in the year there will be the first A8 with front-wheel drive, a version of the TDI engine that has been reduced to 204 hp, with which not only the price should drop below 70,000 euros, but above all the consumption will drop again: 6.0 Nobody else manages liters and 159 g / km.

Although the sporty driving impression was at the top of the internal catalog of requirements of the Ingolstadt-based company, the A8 is as comfortable and feudal as the suite of a five-star hotel. You indulge in a noble ambience made of root wood, bare aluminum and piano lacquer, enjoy the princely spatial conditions of the stretched body, sit enthroned on sinfully comfortable leather seats and use a futuristic infotainment world that turns the A8 into a rolling hotspot with integrated WiFi access and live in the Navigation imported Google photos.

In addition, Audi primarily relies on the concentrated intelligence of new assistance systems. Like the competition, the A8 is not only equipped with cameras and sensors that can recognize traffic signs and pedestrians at night or initiate emergency braking before a rear-end collision. For the first time, the engineers are also making use of the local knowledge of the navigation system and using the electronic map data to adjust the adaptive headlights even before the driver reaches an intersection or the motorway entrance, for example. And never before could you operate the navigation system with your handwriting.

As always, the new A8 is of course made of aluminum again. In this way, the Bavarians conceal not only the standard all-wheel drive, but also the noticeable growth of their luxury liner compared to the competition. Although the largest car in the segment, the A8 therefore weighs around 100 kilos less than the Seventh and S-Class – although it is difficult to speak of lightweight construction with at least 1.8 tons.

The new A8 is undisputedly one of the best luxury sedans in the world and a serious challenge to Mercedes and BMW. But for the moment, the competitors can lean back relatively calmly: While Audi only sold 2000 copies with us last year, the S-Class Sevens come in more than three times as much. At least in terms of statistics, the summiteer still has a long way to go.
