The Hyundai Ioniq 5 sets sign. Not only as an electric car with redesigned design for the South Korean automobile manufacturer, but also with electric car news.net. The short test of Markus Gust, which has gone online a little longer than half a year ago, has already through the title “A short test: Hyundai Ioniq 5 – more appears than to be?”Created for a stir and became at the latest by the activities in the comments to one of the items in 2021 most reads.

Reason enough for us to look more closely at the Hyundai Ioniq 5. With the one or other prejudice to clean up or even show that it is true. Wolfgang Plank already had this in his testHyundai Ioniq 5 with 800 volts: highly exciting – our experience report”. Now it was in good two weeks to gather experiences and impressions that I want to share with you.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-ioniq

In advance, it is still mentioned, my impressions are completely subjective and reflect only my own opinion. But think that the information, impressions and photos in this article can contribute to the first image of Hyundai Ioniq 5, with rear drive and 72.6 kWh battery.

As always applies; If after reading the test and driving report of the Ioniq 5 of Hyundai from your side still questions open questions, just report and I try to answer them. You like to send me your personal experiences with the E-car of Hyundai, so that we share them with the other readers. About electric cars In general, you can inform yourself on this page.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Publishers of the new electrical sub-brand

The South Korean automobile manufacturer, which will only be electrically on the road from 2035 in Europe, has launched the IoniQ 5 the first stromer of its sub-brand IoniQ, which was founded in 2020,. Under the name Ioniq, which connects the two terms “ion” and “unique”, Hyundai announced 2016 for the first time a long-term research and development project under the focus of environmentally friendly mobility.

In addition, e-mobility interested in recalling that the company 2016 with the Hyundai IoniQ has brought the first vehicle, which has been designed exclusively for three electrified drives – Hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electro on the road. A good sign for the Ioniq 5, which we take more closely in the variant with rear drive and large battery (72.6-kWh). In addition to this variant, there is the stromer still in other variants.

So customers have the choice between two battery options, four power levels and the choice between rear and four-wheel drive. Depending on the selected configuration, it brings the electric car to up to 481 km range to WTLP, as well as a capacity of up to 225 kW / 305 hp. Of course, we will continue to go closer to the technical details of my test vehicle later. All variants The same is the fact that these build on the new E-vehicle platform E-GMP, which also plays its advantages visible in the interior – as shown by the integrated photos already.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-hyundai

Furthermore, it is so that the E-GMP platform brings the great advantage of extremely fast loading. In the price range in which the Ioniq 5 moves as a volume model, there are sometimes barely competition, which also relies on 800 volts technology. This makes it possible to load the stromer in only 18 minutes from 10 to 80 percent. Provided the charging station has according to POWER. But he can not only pick up electricity, but also give away. External 230 volt terminals can be connected and operated both inside and outside on the vehicle.

This technology is operated as a so-called “Vehicle-to-Load function”, short V2L. This allows any electrical appliances such as e-bikes, e-scooters or notebooks with up to 230 volts with up to 230 volts. An output of up to 3.6 kilowatts can be done by the V2L function. To put this in relation to: This is enough to operate a medium-sized air conditioning and a 55-inch TV for up to 24 hours.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-hyundai

Now consider the real occurrence of the electricity and the design approaches, which Hyundai conjured up for his sub-brand Ioniq from the quiver a little more accurate.

Progressive, edgy, noticeable – the Ioniq 5 of Hyundai

Unobtrusively one of the words is not associated with the Hyundai e-vehicle. On the contrary of the 4.635 mm long, 1.890 mm wide and 1.605 mm high CUV falls on. At a wheelbase of 3.000 mm not only through its space, which can be added to the D segment. But above all by his design, which wants to beat a bridge between the past and future of the South Korean brand.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-ioniq

I can distinguish the Ioniq 5 from other vehicles from the manufacturer’s portfolio through its so-called “clamshell” motor hood, which is used for the first time in a Hyundai. The name is reminiscent of a shell shell, which sets itself in the case of the electric car over the entire vehicle width. Combined with very small column dimensions, a high-quality overall picture is characterized with for Stromer, good aerodynamic properties.

Striking also the luminaires of the Stromer – which set on so-called “Parametric Pixels”. These in turn lead digital and analog design components together and reflect the timeless design of the submark. The pixel-like headlamps and taillights of the Ioniq 5 are at the same time the visible expression of the advanced digital technologies of the vehicle, as to show the South Koreans. From my own experience, I can say that these luminaires often have the beginning of talks about the Stromer.

In terms of aerodynamics does not listen to the newlywed bonnet. If at all, it starts there and runs over the page where flush-finished door handles continue to the rear of the vehicle. The stromer itself rests, in the case of our test vehicle, on 20-inch wheels, which were also optimized aerodynamically and visually reminiscent of diamonds. And in my view in my view paste very harmoniously into the overall design of the E-vehicle.

For more design elements, especially in the interior, I would like to go closer to a later point. Rather, it is important to me to risk a look at the different variants of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. At the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the customer can choose between multiple electric drive configurations. Depending on the power level (125, 160, 173 and 225 kW), up to two electric motors, rear or four-wheel drive as well as the battery options 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh are available (gross indication). Depending on the selected variant, the range varies from 360 to 481 km range. The maximum speed of 185 km / h is equal.

In the case of our test vehicle, we remember Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the rear drive variant with 160 kW, the streamer comes according to technical data on a range of 481 kilometers to WLTP – a 72.6 kWh large lithium-ion battery is thank you. As the e-car beats in everyday life, of course, I have also taken under the microscope.

Fully electric through everyday life with the Hyundai Ioniq 5

The feeling when boarding into the stromer is quite a special. Already when opening the door falls on that the South Koreans have laid a lot of value in place and free space in the vehicle. Which was also possible by the specially used E-GMP platform. A little strange was that I felt very far back in the vehicle, until the Ioniq 5 has driven the driver’s seat in his position after printing on the start button. The center console, as you can find it from other vehicles felt completely gone. Only a small “multifunction island” is found there. This can also be moved if you would have to enter right right. The gear selector lever was accommodated on the steering wheel. Likewise the selection of driving modes: Eco, normal and sport.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-test

That the Ioniq 5 but still wants to be far more than a pure vehicle is evident in that it relies on flexibly adjustable and heated front seats, which come with fold-out leg rest and relax function. Relaxation during charging is guaranteed. Even if this ideally takes only 18 minutes. Who looks out more precisely, see that the driver can also move the back seat by buttons on the passenger seat, up to 135 mm. Electrically sees itself. The stromer is therefore in fact, as praised, a place miracle and offers even for 1.84 cm people like me enough space on the back seat.

Even more space is felt in the trunk available: 527 liters capacity, with completely folded back seats almost 1.600 liters. And who has even stowed more, looking at the bonnet. In the local frunk can be stowed up to 57 liters.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-test

In my test car, the optionally available panoramic glass roof was installed, but a solar roof. This brings the electricity energy from the solar cells installed there. Up to 1.500 km more range per year should be made possible. For the current winter conditions there was no way to test this approximately realistic. I have already benefited from the built-in heat pump in the vehicle.

Other E cars, the Ioniq 5 comes directly from the spot and is also decent in urban everyday life. Only in terms of recuperation would still have optimization requirements. Here, the manufacturer sets on a switch-mounted I-pedal function, which should lead to “one-pedal” running. This also does, but from my personal view far too strongly on the brake occurs. Quite a little difficult, especially if the subsequent vehicles tend to drive too tight.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-hyundai

Otherwise, the good two tons of severe E-CUV slides without problems with urban city traffic. He was felt on overland routes, which have shown more curviers, not so quiet on the way. Likes to lie on the non-adaptive suspension and the combination of 20 inch tires. But if you know it, you can get in line with it. By the way, with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 there is another electrician on the market of the trailer with a permissible total weight of 1.600 kg from A to B can.

Reach, consumption and charging options in view

In the previous sections, I have already entered into some aspects of fully electric driving with the Ioniq 5 of Hyundai. It has dotted both in terms of design, processing and performance. Now it is important that we invite the topic to take a little closer to the magnifying glass. First, the facts for my test vehicle.

  • Tail drive with 160 kW / 217 hp power, at 350 nm torque

  • Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.4 seconds

  • Top speed of 185 km / h

  • 72.6 kWh lithium-ion battery (gross)

  • Energy consumption to 100 km (weighted) 17.9 kWh with 20 inch wheels

  • Range (combined) 451 km to WLTP with 20 inch wheels

  • 0 g / km CO2 emissions, combined

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 loads both 400 volts and 800 volt charging points. At a 350 kW fast load column, the high-voltage battery of the E-CUV according to the manufacturer invites you to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. A charging period of five minutes are sufficient for a range of 100 kilometers to WLTP standard. An announcement and definitely reason enough to banish the rich bidding finally out of everyday life.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-ioniq

Due to the currently applicable Covid-19 reguliarities, a lot of time in the home office and only conditionally necessary car rides, the Ioniq 5 comes up to the 350 kilometers, which I have covered with this. Nevertheless, I tried that of pure city trips, over overland- to highway traveling everything you can experience with a streamer. Thus, I had the possibility to map a very good cross-section through the routes, which the Stromer of Hyundai probably also mastered under “normal events”.

The power of Hyundai truly benefits from building on a platform designed for e-vehicles. This not only allows more space in the interior, but also improves the driving performance. A correspondingly large battery pack can also be better accommodated here than for platforms that are used for both electric cars and burners. Furthermore, the South Korean manufacturer executes that in the IoniQ 5, the power density of the high-voltage battery could be implemented higher than ever before.

Come directly to talk about the facts, the Ioniq 5 draws more energy from the battery than it is specified in the technical data. In itself not surprising what it’s different with the previous vehicle. Between 23- 24.5 kWh / 100 km stood on the digital display. For comparison, Hyundai performs an energy consumption of 17.9 kWh / 100 km – mind you, if the stromer rests on 20-inch wheels, which was the case with my test car. With 19-inch wheels the energy consumption is 16.8 kWh / 100 km.

Fast charging station 350 kW

The fastest possible charging option thus offer DC loads with 350 kW charging power. In just 18 minutes, the battery is charged from ten to 80 percent. An announcement. In other words, the Ioniq 5 electricity for a good 100 kilometers range according to WLTP per five minutes at a fast loading column. I was able to load the stromer once during the test phase – at the 50 kW loader. In an hour and 24 minutes it went there from around the 26 percent battery level to 100 percent. Loaded at this time 58,943 kWh.

Exterior and interior in focus

Both the exterior and the inner design of the Ioniq 5 we have already looked closer through the article. Nevertheless, we want to steer the look a little more closely. Especially since the manufacturer has made serious thoughts on sustainability, on a variety of levels. When painting the outer parts, environmental friendliness is set. This is evident in that the polyurethane colors used are derived from natural dyes that occur in flowers and corn plants.

In the interior, the use of preferably environmentally friendly materials continues. So the seats are covered with a leather, which was dyed and treated with vegetable oil extracts from flaxseed. Further upholstery consists of textiles made from sustainable fibers such as organic sugar cane, wool and yarns on plant base. The South Koreans also use fabrics that are woven from fibers recycled PET plastic bottles. Surfaces such as the dashboard, the switches, the steering wheel and the door panels are coated with a polyurethane biosack, which is obtained from RAPS and corn oil. In addition, floor mats are used, which consist of Econyyl – a material that produces the sea protection organization Healthy Seas together with its recycled fishnets and other collected waste from the oceans.

This is done only as an example why sustainability in e-mobility does not stop at the electric drive, but there – whom consistently intended – only starts there. However, we come back to more eye-catching things. As mentioned above, the streamer in the interior is very minimalist. Therefore, it is not surprising that the view is directed directly to the wide digital cockpit, which has a 12.25 inch display. On the left is a magnetic surface where certain metallic objects can be attached. Right there is another 12.25 inch display – in this case with touchscreen function – to find. This controls the infotainment system of the vehicle.

In the case of my test vehicle, I also enjoyed enjoying a Augmented Reality functions Head-Up Display. Which important information is projected directly in the field of view when driving. Starting the charging process via app, improved voice control – still a little hakelus from my view -, Connected Routing and Last Mile Navigation complete the occurrence of the electricity. More details about assistance systems can be found here.

Although not tested by me – since the confidence is missing a little – the possibility to park and park the vehicle only with the remote control. The driver can leave his vehicle and activate the function at the push of a button on his smart key. The vehicle then ranks autonomously into the parking space or again forward from it – no matter whether the gap is aligned parallel or at right angles to the roadside.

Parking against the futuristic possibility to park its own stromer Rear view camera, heatable seats, wireless charging function for smartphone as well as electric tailgate already restrained. But are just the “little things”, which distinguish the vehicle in everyday life as a practical companion. Further details on the equipment and additional functions should be read directly at Hyundai, as a variety of configuration options is listed here.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Prices & Promotion by Environmental Bonus

If the previous impressions of the Stromer of Hyundai have convinced you, then it’s time to take a look at prices at the time. Whether the promotion by the environmental bonus for the electric car of the South Korean is an option I do not want to leave.

Since February 2020 there is more money when an electric car under a list price of 40.000 Euro is acquired. 6.000 Euro instead of 4.000 Euro will now be reimbursed by the purchase price. At plug-in hybrids in this price range, there will be 4 in the future.500 euros instead of 3.000 EURO. For electric cars with a list price over 40.000 Euro will be the subsidy for pure E cars in the future at 5.000 Euro lie, for plug-in hybrids at 4.000 EURO. Furthermore, with the latest economic package, a promotion of pure E cars amounting to a maximum of 9.000 Euro possible; If the net list price below 40.000 Euro is.

Whoever has taken care of has noted that the three other drive options have not yet been listed. These are listed below, with the additional price of the relation to the base variant of the electricity, if you decide for this.

Ioniq 5 – 72.6 kWh – 160 kW – rear drive

Ioniq 5 – 72.6 kWh – 225 kW – all-wheel drive

7.000,00 Euro

Surcharge in addition to the price of the basic variant Ioniq 5

It was introduced to me of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the 72.6 kWh – 160 kW rear drive variant. This comes from the factory on a price of 45.100 euros. Added to the UNIQ package you end up at 56.600 Euro list price. In addition, special painting, 20 inch tires, relax package and solar roof, that conclusive 60.710 euros on the bill. From this the environmental bonus can be deducted in full. How the acquisition price, such as Hyundai names it in its configurator, at 51.140 euros is.

Conclusion to test the Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hmm, indeed difficult to grasp a conclusion for me to Ioniq 5 of Hyundai. What lies because he has received in the media in the media. Muchs, but a lot is not again. I noticed the very high energy consumption, the fact that I felt in the interior too much clearance and you could still have one or the other meaningful button.

When driving behavior you should differ in terms of daily driving, what the ioniq 5 is well mastered in urban environments. On longer routes, overland and highway, the weight that has to be moved must be quite noticeable. Especially in the already mentioned energy consumption. Too, too, I personally did not come up with the high degree of recuperation and would have been able to raise more influence here.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: Our Test, Impressions & Experiences-ioniq

The driving modes have already been good setting options to adapt the stromer to their own driving behavior. In terms of design, the ghosts divorce. Either he likes or not. For me, I have decided that he has a good figure, offers proper space. In particular, the generous trunk has convinced. Also the claim to let the driver “relax” to please in the e-car loading. The question is only, it is used regularly that you would like to pay for a four-digit surcharge?

Finally, it is self-contemplating, driving and to make a separate verdict. I’m looking forward to the KIA EV6, which builds on the same platform. Maybe this succeeds this a few points differently, better implement.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was free of charge for this review for this review, for the period of two weeks, from Hyundai. However, this has no influence on my written honest opinion written here.

  1. Nice. Mine should come in April 22. With panoramic roof, RWD, large battery. First planned goal (says Corona): Lisbon. As a replacement for a Kona Electric after 3 years leasing.

  2. I can not understand the criticism of the recuperation. In all previous tests and even with my rides with the four-wheel Ioniq 5, I was able to customize the recuperation strength with the paddles or dose exactly due to the One Pedal Driving with foot-fit ..

  3. There was really a call from Hyundai in response to Markus Gust? And wanted to influence Hyundai influence or have you wondered only about the partially crude assessments in the article?

  4. Hello, the high degree of recuperation is manually adjustable at the Hyundai in 4 stages and also has automatic operation in which the vehicle selects the resistance itself depending on the moving circumstances. Unfortunately, I have to confirm the high consumption in winter with 23-25kWh. I drive since about. 3 months the same model was driven as in the test. Tail drive and big battery.
Overall, I’m still very excited about my ioniq5.He still has a few weak points. I noticed that the high beam is not very bright and disappointed. Just like the Bose Sound System, which lies behind the expectations. What convinced me is the lush space and the big trunk and the design that has picked up 100%. Unfortunately, I can not share any experiences about the fast 800V.

  5. Hi,
To the recuperation: I drive the ur Ioniq and like to use different levels of recuperation. This also offers the Ioniq 5.
One Padel Driving you do not have to choose.
In the article, the strong recuperation is criticized in the strongest level, but not mentioned that the author was unable to change the level SI that he was satisfied.
I often use the sailing. If the author had done so, the consumption would certainly have fallen. You like a caraffinian journalist, alone the experience and expertise of an early adopter is missing you.
Please speak before the next test with yielding e car drivers!

  6. I’ve written it several times – the design of a car is basically pretty unimportant because I do not see anything about it when I sit in there, nor after I parked it. What I see are cockpit and steering wheel. And I do not like both in the Hyundai at all. The sight of this, thread ‘steering wheel has insulted almost my eyes &# 128521; And I finally landed at Audi.
    Only Tesla can be worse.

  7. Mhm that the 5 in winter 23..24 kWh consumes, maybe still on short distances with test of the performance, is not unusual now. The distance to the WLTP is available for all E vehicles.

It is a pity rather the basic development compared to the predecessor Ioniq with 13-14 kWh WLTP and under 20 kWh in unfavorable scenarios.

  8. “A capacity of up to 3.6 kilowatts can be done by the V2L function. To put this in relation to: This is enough to operate a medium-sized air conditioning and a 55-inch TV for up to 24 hours.”

Aua, these sentences do really hurt. Performance is uneven energy and a “medium sized air conditioning” as a comparative scale maximally voted. A 55-inch TV is usually a good 100 watts of power requirement, power in 24h 2.4 kWh. With HDR it is also 150 watts and more, then 3.6 kWh alone is already connected by the TV. However, with a 72.6 kWh battery, you should not spend more than 3 kW power to hold through at all (theoretically) 24 hours, the kilowatt specified in the text should be meant as a performance.

    Yes, I know, Corinthenkackerei and so, but there are so many questionable pages, because “electric car news” has previously been positive about it and it would be great if it stays that way &# 128521;

  9. I have my Ioniq 5 now for 3 months, I’m quite satisfied.
It is the rear drive version 217 hp, 72 kWh battery, Dynamiq package.
The design is like written flavor, I did not want to wait for the IV 6 anymore.
The large space between the driver and front passenger I find again great, the passenger is always looking forward to having room for the purse.
My conclusion, the car is for long-range only due to the reach.
For long-distance suitable for me a vehicle is to drive around the 400 km in a piece.
I come with the vehicle if I drive it like our diesel only half so far, from the loss of time while loading, which is sometimes really very fast (13 minutes from 18 to 81%, but was an exceptional column).
For the route Hockenheim Vienna I need with the diesel on average 7 hours with once 10 liters after refueling.
I drive the same route with the Ioniq 5 I have to charge 3 times What matters in about 90 minutes of time loss In addition, I can not drive the speeds that I drive with the diesel because then would be with the Ioniq after 180 km the battery indicator against 0.

So in the city, especially in rural areas, with its own Wallbox I would recommend him unrestricted because of the driving it is just pleasant because quiet also a quick progress in a lot of space in the passenger compartment.

Errors also has the car and the nerves me.
On the one hand of the steering assistant, he sometimes brings the car to swindle and is so angry that makes no pleasure.
On the other hand the route planning or better the planning where I need to approach a charging column on the route is just missing. So in advance, the search for charging columns be made along the route with other apps, currently there Hyundai for the year 22 at this point
    Rusting has announced.

  11. I have been the car for 4 months and recommend each one bottle of wash water and a rubber window cleaner in the car! I was incomprehensible to the Hyunday here on a windscreen wiper on the back. The airflow does not keep the slice clean and with many rain conditions you have absolutely no point of view back.
In the case of rewarding, the point of view of the rear camera is also impaired by water drops. You drive then blind backwards.I’m wondering that almost all testers did not notice and criticize that in their reports.I already think about a subsequent installation of a windshield wiper
Is not that easy. Maybe Hyunday delivers a “retrofit kit”.I give 5 minus points!!!!!
