Why I really wanted a classic car

How Jost Kaiser got his old Opel Rekord-opel

Actually, our author doesn’t believe in nostalgia. Nevertheless, he went looking for an old car and found an Opel Rekord that tells a lot about the time it was built.

D.a, the German state had a good idea in 1997: monument protection according to the people. We are surrounded by architecture, of course, that shapes our cities, the churches, the old town halls, half-timbered houses, Bauhaus, early modernism. But we have no personal memory of them, no such intense haptic experience. On a Ford Taunus, built in 1975, on the other hand.

He is closer to us. Other generations may name other models here, but car design is the shape that has surrounded us every day since childhood. Cars are ideas, they are the color of the times, they are life concepts that drive. And therefore rightly elevated to a cultural monument and tax-privileged with the H mark.

When I was sitting in a so-called Knudsen-Taunus at the beginning of the year and the skinny steering wheel, the almost sticky, licorice-like dark switch button and the engine noise, in the Proustian sense, reminded me of my previous life through direct sensory experience, I knew : I also want a classic car.

And not just me: the number of state-approved classic cars is increasing by ten percent every year. 350,000 old cars are on the road in Germany. Sometimes their owners want to buy back their childhood, sometimes they speculate on an increase in value, others just want to drive cheaply.

The cultural-political fascination of the 1970s

Actually, I find nostalgia reactionary – the slogan “Everything was better in the past” is a lie. Nevertheless, there is a cultural and political fascination for the 1970s. To enter this time by opening a car door and then moving around seemed tempting to me. And so the idea was born. The journey to the old tin began. My first inspiration: No Ford, it should be a BMW02, built in the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies.

The BMW 02: At the beginning of the sixties, the neo-Marxist beards preached the class war, BMW had long since had the better idea and brought out the "New Class": sporty sedans, fast and light, large windows, ultra-modern, cleared reform design, suitable for the time of Departure. BMW’s rise coincided with the rise of Munich: from Bayern-Muff to Munich-Pop, Otl Aicher’s Olympic design, Frei Otto’s Olympic stadium roof, BMW’s avant-garde headquarters with a museum. The cheeky Uschi Glas.

I associated all of this with the BMW. I saw myself in the vehicle, it was supposed to be a BMW 1602 from 1975, next to me Uschi, on the radio Kurt Edelhaben’s Olympic music or Giorgio Moroder’s “Sound of Munich”. Off to the dealer north of Munich, for self-protection, I have a colleague who is also infected by the virus, but who is well versed in the subject, with me. He’s supposed to be the spoiler, the advocatus diaboli.

Tierkpark-Toni brings the old cars from Portugal

“Anyone who loves classic cars doesn’t have one,” he says. The dealer looks like a Helmut Dietl figure, maybe Tierpark Toni from “Monaco Franze”. He got the wrong BMW ready to drive, namely the one without a sunroof, there are Mercedes tailfin coupes in the yard, a whole fleet of BMW 02s – and a new, neon-colored Lamborghini. Lamborghini always means: business is good. Only which ones? The catchphrase is: Portugal. Tierpark-Toni fetches the cars from there: only sun, no salt, no rain. But the dashboards break through because of the heat, says my companion.

We drive the wrongly made clear car to the test, you don’t want to have come here for nothing. Total disappointment. The thing floats, the steering has play, it’s just an old, musty car. If the old-timer idea is nonsense, maybe it’s just old cars after all?

Then Tierpark-Toni – he thinks we want to hear that – also reel offs a culturally pessimistic address: that everything was better in the past, the old story of today’s well-sucked forms (in politics, Wehner and Strauss are always cited on this topic ), but the youth got it too and ran into him because of the good old days.

But I don’t want a bad mood, I want to see the young Uschi Glas sitting next to me, I want the joy of Munich pop and no traveling criticism of the present. “You won’t get a better 02,” he says when he leaves. It’s a goodbye forever.

The classic car among the classic cars

The next attempt is a dealer with a broad portfolio, Audi 80, Rallye Ascona, VW Passat, first series in bright green, Mercedes / 8. On his website, in the style of the RTL nostalgia shows, he tries to give each car a cultural and historical interpretation so that one understands what classic cars are about. It’s this "cult" gossip that immediately puts you in a bad mood. About an Audi 80, built in 1976: "The disco scene entered the charts in 1976, David Dundas with ‘Jeans On’, of course Abba, Rod Steward with ‘Sailing’, the hammer for me!"

Sheet metal on the outside, red velor on the inside: the Opel Rekord was the muscle car of the German medium-sized company

Source: bernhardhuber.com

The Opel Rekord Berlina, built in 1977, red sheet metal outside, red velor inside, is not that great, however. And the dealer says the car has yet to be reconditioned. As? That’s why we’re here. After sitting in there anyway, it shoots in the head: The man must be able to work miracles.

You can’t process that much that the most obvious thought would be extinguished: namely, to drive the car to the junkyard. Rebuilding Rust is a more difficult undertaking than Rebuilding East.

The dealer’s national catchphrase this time: Sweden, this is the classic car wonderland. Snow and rain, but no salt. From there he imports. The Swedish Opel has not survived the salt-free Scandinavian idyll – but maybe the white Mercedes / 8, built in 1975?

The test drive feels good, maybe also because the Opel almost fell apart. Strange realization: In the classic car world, a Mercedes is not necessarily better than an Opel. Because: A / 8 is already the old-timer among the old-timers, almost unoriginal.

Autonomous people only want to drive Mercedes

The car has already gone through so many phases of reinterpretation: as early as the early eighties, the first specimens with a black star on the hood and inside were demonstratively littered, from the highest expression of solid bourgeoisie from the autonomous and related milieu to the driving stinky finger on the way to Wackersdorf repurposed. Soot came out the back, the joints steamed inside. Hundreds of copies have passed over the Jordan in this way. At that time, the police only had to regularly check this type of vehicle and almost always landed a direct hit.

Source: Infographic Die Welt, Kienle

On the other hand: Isn’t it touching that in the end the Autonomists only wanted one thing, with whatever ironic trickery disguised – namely to drive a Mercedes? Somehow reassuring that certain needs run through all social hobby groups.

And today: The driving experience is still something very special, this self-confident bourgeois impression, the wonderful feel, the diverging and reuniting windshield wipers that I only saw on rare taxi rides as a child.

Is this Scandinavian wonder only 55,000 kilometers down after 40 years? My companion destroys the emerging intention to buy with one word: “Sales paintwork. Someone quickly put the spray bottle on. 55,000 kilometers? A feverish fantasy. You put 10,000 euros in there. "

But: Despite all the scrap from Sweden, I’m now on Opel. And it will stay that way. High gain in distinction, low price, low risk. If Opel had the same status with the current models as with the old boxes in the classic car scene: There would never have been a crisis, the company would be the market leader.

The renaissance of the cadets, manta rays and asconas on the youngtimer market was often interpreted as an ironic expression of narrow-mindedness. This is wrong. The Opel models The 1960s and 1970s were an expression of the successful integration of the Federal Republic into the West.

An Opel is needed, an Opel Rekord

While the Beetle combined National Socialism and the economic miracle in a strange way, the Opels (and Fords) were a mixture of Helmut Schelsky’s "leveled medium-sized society" and American muscle car pomp, of persistence and a furious thirst for adventure; they radiated the utopia of running away quickly with a neat acoustic appearance. The A9 became the interstate for German-American synthesis on four wheels.

That this idea still works is reassuring. Wear Nike Air Max, set a record. That fits. I want that too: An Opel is needed. A record. My trip ends with Frank. He’s sitting in the north of Berlin in a workshop between old advertising signs for motor oil and has to offer an Opel Rekord E1, white, built in 1977, 100 hp, “Berlina” equipment, GM three-speed automatic, black vinyl roof, red velor equipment, Opel S package with additional high beam and fog lights.

New objectivity: the body of the Opel Rekord D already gave a foretaste of the 80s

Source: bernhardhuber.com

The same model as the Schweden-Schrott in Bavaria, only in a completely different condition. 1977: an interesting year. The reform euphoria is passe, the seventies were drowned in the hail of bullets from the RAF. Punk is over again, new wave is coming. Can you see that in the Opel design? No of course not.

Well, a bit. No slippery coke bottle shape, but the drag coefficient already rules in the utopian sobering times, Opel speaks of "wind slipperiness" and writes in the TV commercial: "Its shape was created by the wind, its technology by modern technology."

Best of all: The car is not defined enough for the hipsters who have emptied the market for the Opel Rekord D models. Too little flokati, too little Afri-Cola sultriness. No pop, instead new objectivity. The model is not yet listed on the overheated youngtimer stock market. Therefore, the car not only has a fresh image, it offers distinction from the distinction fetishists. Opel to the power of two. A hybrid: the seventies on the inside, the eighties without illusions already begin on the outside.

Latest news in the old mono sound

A few days later. The car is transferred to Munich. The Opel factory radio Le Mans: the latest news in the old mono sound. Although: The new news today is still the same as it was in the late seventies: Afghanistan, terror, political Islam. How many wish concerts streamed from this factory radio into the ear of the first owner from Geilenkirchen, born in 1921?

He heard the message on October 18, 1977, perhaps coming late from the so-called bowling alley: "12:38 am, this is the Deutschlandfunk with an important message: The 86 hostages kidnapped by terrorists in a Lufthansa Boeing have all been happily freed"?

Now the Opel belongs to him. The original factory radio is still on in Jost Kaiser’s car, and the news is not much different today either at the end of the 1970s

Now the Opel is mine. Rudolphstein, former GDR border crossing. Here my father was once supposed to remove the back seat from his Opel Rekord 1700 on the orders of the “organs”. He couldn’t.
