Historic low for new registrations: Opportunity for car dealers-dealers

With 2.62 million passenger car registrations, the year 2021 closes with a good 300.000 vehicles less than compared to the previous year – a historically low value on the German car market. Compared to 2019, there are even almost a million fewer (-985.126) Approvals.

Looking at the bare numbers, this sounds very serious. But the trends also reveal opportunities that need to be identified in order to take advantage of them, according to market research and consulting firm DataForce. For the first time, the relevant fleet market, i.e. commercial new registrations without vehicle construction, dealerships and car rental companies, has now achieved a share of 30 percent, which once again underlines the focus on this target group.

Mobility change in fleet and private

Surveys of fleet operators and company car drivers in Germany show many efforts to open up the mobility mix, according to DataForce in a recent press release. The introduction of mobility budgets led to a reduction in the number of vehicles in some fleets. But even if the company car entitled to consider whether a vehicle can still be in question for you or whether one can not cover his needs about other forms of mobility, these considerations are equally strong in private consumers. In times of working from home without long commutes, many people are considering whether a second car in the household still makes sense.

A counterpoint to this trend is the fact that the vehicle itself and the more diversified types of drive form a very strong incentive for company car drivers, and not just for tax reasons. With many new brands outside Germany and the established manufacturers bringing new models onto the market, there was a sharp increase in new registrations of plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles in 2021.

Electromobility and holistic concepts offer potential

The drive to drive a car with a charging cable is unbroken among private buyers and company fleets, which is confirmed not least by the fact that the fund for the promotion of privately usable charging stations/wall boxes was again exhausted at the end of the year. DataForce sees great potential here, with extensive services, good advice on drive types and holistic mobility concepts at local fleets to score. Because in order for the change in mobility to work in vehicle fleet practice, good and tailor-made concepts are needed.

This starting point is an opportunity for local retailers as well as for large retail groups and manufacturers to address them in a targeted and needs-based manner. DataForce is currently assuming that these market trends will push the total number of registrations forward again and that a volume of around 3 million cars can be expected in 2022.
