When cornering: The AMG-S-Class should also score points when it comes to handling at a sporty pace. This does not detract from the claim of a business limousine.

Measured against the bear power of this car, its external appearance is subtle. Double tailpipes and glowing red brake callipers show that the sportier S-Class is on the road here.

S 63 AMG – that is the traditional name of the tuning variant of the Mercedes flagship – also the latest version. But the luxury liner with the lush performance is struggling with an internal contradiction.
L.is he running or not running? With a Mercedes S-Class you have to listen carefully if you want to hear something from the engine. But as soon as AMG has its fingers in the game, this question can be answered much easier: Even the otherwise reserved luxury liner roars briefly after the factory tuning, at least when it is started. Just a few months after the premiere of the flagship of the brand with the star, AMG is now re-launching its interpretation of the S-Class.
Under the mighty hood of the S 63 AMG, instead of the 4.7-liter V8 from the series, there is the well-known AMG eight-cylinder. If you add almost 50 percent to the 104,601 euros for the S500 and transfer at least 149,881 euros, you can look forward to 5.5 liters of displacement and 585 hp – and an extra helping of sound: Because for the first time AMG is building sound flaps in the exhaust.
In C mode, the tuning Benz suddenly becomes a real roar in the “Sport” and “Manual” drive programs. But a bit of a show is also allowed, one thinks in Affalterbach. Matching this: the performance of the S 63 AMG, which corresponds to that of a super sports car. During the sprint, the reworked S-Class is up to 100 km / h in 4.0 seconds, and at 250 km / h it is not yet finished.
Nobody is interested in consumption
The consumption is no less impressive: depending on the configuration, the luxury sedan treats itself to between 10.1 and 10.3 liters. This means that the S 63 AMG is around half a liter more frugal than its predecessor – thanks to a diet of around two hundredweight. But a few bursts of gas are enough to give the data sheet the lie and double this value.
It can be doubted that relevant buyers of such a car will be deterred by the thirst for fuel. But so that no false expectations arise here: The S-Class accelerates better from the gym than some Porsche 911s and, thanks to the corresponding activation, storms up to 300 km / h for an extra charge of around 3200 euros.
But AMG boss Ola Kallenius doesn’t want it to be a super sports car: “Driving dynamics without any compromise on comfort,” says Kallenius as a development guideline. After all, customers wanted to be able to sit in the back on the right instead of in the front on the left in the S 63 AMG.
Chassis not tuned so hard
In this way, the luxury liner always maintains composure, even when the pace is tough: the transmission shifts smoothly and smoothly, the chassis is anything but hard, and the steering also obeys the little finger.
If you order the version with the short wheelbase, you can also rely on the Magic Body Control, which scans the road with its stereo camera, detects bumps in advance and programs the suspension so that you actually float over bumps and bumps as if on a magic carpet.
It’s a pleasure in the AMG version too. But the better choice is made despite the simpler, but by no means worse, chassis with the long wheelbase. For a surcharge of less than 3000 euros, the long version not only offers more space, but also comes with all-wheel drive as standard. And that can’t hurt with up to 900 Newton meters of torque.
A little bit of fun is always good
Equipped in this way, the S 63 AMG delivers its enormous power better than before, even on wet mountain passes or with the first snow on the road, comparatively reliably. And because at least two thirds of the power goes to the rear axle, you won’t get bored at the wheel. Because the all-wheel drive shouldn’t be a fun brake with a tendency to understeer, says Kallenius.
Despite the rich eight-cylinder sound in the correct drive program and the propulsion of a super sports car – the S 63 AMG is also supposed to be a chauffeur-driven limousine for officials, as contradicting as that sounds. In order to otherwise meet this requirement, AMG has only given the seats a slightly stronger shape and relies on a lot of leather instead of an expressly sporty ambience.
Even on the outside, it is only details such as the wider front or the four tailpipes under the new rear apron that distinguish the tuning version from the production model. Especially in Europe, customers appreciate this subtle appearance, after all, the S 63 AMG is usually parked in some company parking lot, says AMG Product Manager Thomas Rappel.
And for everyone who still wants more, the Swabians have the right solutions: When it comes to design, the AMG Performance Studio caters to individual tastes with lots of muscular trim, and under the hood the development department will soon help: it has the S 65 AMG with V12 -Motor already in progress.
