On test: the Jaguar F-Pace SVR. The top model of the Jaguar SUV family convinces with driving pleasure and comfort.

Jaguar stands for design, sporty driving pleasure and dignified travel. The F-Pace, the brand’s large SUV, must also live up to this. Especially when the abbreviation “SVR” is emblazoned on the radiator grille and tailgate – because this letter combination designates the top model of a series at the traditional British brand.

The appropriate propulsion is provided by an engine that is well known in the Jaguar Land Rover group: the 5.0-liter V8 with supercharging is used in the large Range Rover SUV models, but also in the sports coupe Jaguar F- Type.

The V8 also offers more than enough power for the more than two-ton F-Pace with all-wheel drive; thanks to 550 hp, the sprint to 100 km/h would be possible in 4.3 seconds, which is hardly relevant in everyday life. Much more important is the power development of the high-capacity supercharged engine: In contrast to many modern turbo engines, it needs a certain speed to deliver its full power. But the power builds up uniquely evenly and can be dosed. This is how you drive wonderfully relaxed with sovereign power – knowing full well that the F-Pace always has enough power reserves in stock, which are well managed by the 8-speed automatic transmission.

This is matched by the chassis tuning in the powerful SUV: Despite the huge 22-inch wheels with mixed tires (265 front, 295 rear), the suspension comfort is flawless even on bad roads. Fuel consumption levels off at around 10 l/100 km on the motorway if you drive with foresight. In the test average it was finally 12.1 l/100 km. The Jaguar definitely cannot compete with modern hybrid drives in terms of fuel consumption; but the consumption is acceptable based on the engine concept and range of services – especially since the Briton is certainly not primarily bought with a view to economy. The V8 with its powerful sound should be sufficient for many buyers as a purchase argument.

The F-Pace SVR wasn’t just built for sensible and comfortable gliding anyway. Despite the practical SUV body, it also wants to be a sports car. Sport mode is activated via a toggle switch on the center console. It trims the adaptive shock absorbers to sport, allows the steering and accelerator pedal to respond more directly – and ensures a more powerful sound from the sports exhaust system. However, the V8 does not get overly loud even in sport mode; in the F-Pace SVR, Jaguar must also install a petrol particle filter. These ensure not only cleaner exhaust gases, but also additional sound insulation. While some Jaguar V8 models used to be too loud, the F-Pace is now much more confident and elegant when it comes to sound.

With such sporty tuning, the most powerful F-Pace feels surprisingly agile for its size and weight. It steers effortlessly even into tight corners, has its high weight well under control – and thanks to all-wheel drive it also transfers its power well to the road. In the narrow half-bucket seats and the non-slip steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles, you almost feel like you’re in a sports car – just one floor higher.

Consequently, Jaguar has also strengthened the braking system on the SVR; Even after braking several times in a row, she still has the mass of the SUV well under control.

A well-chosen middle ground

The Jaguar F-Pace SVR cannot and does not want to be an all-rounder. But Jaguar has managed to find good compromises. It starts with the optics. Although the SVR stands out from its tamer siblings with the additional air intakes on the hood and the four-pipe exhaust system, it does not appear overdone or swaggering.

Jaguar also creates the same balance when it comes to voting. Although the “SVR” has significantly more power than the other variants (163 to 300 hp), it is anything but bumpy and sporty over-motivated in everyday life. When the opportunity arises, however, the sports SUV can definitely demonstrate its advantages. When it comes to off-road capability, the “SVR” does not require any more willingness to compromise than is already the case with the F-Pace. Means: forest paths, dirt roads and meadows are no problem; However, the F-Pace lacks ground clearance and differential locks to make it a real off-road vehicle. Anyone who wants or needs that will be referred directly to the sister company Land Rover at the Jaguar dealership. The same applies when it comes to maximum traction: the F-Pace SVR can take a maximum of 2400 kg on the optional trailer hitch. The powerful V8 would undoubtedly pull more, but the sports suspension sets the limits here.

Conclusion: If you are looking for reason, you will not be happy with the F-Pace SVR. But if you want to enjoy a characterful V8 without sacrificing everyday life, you will find a real Jaguar here.
