Million order for ElringKlinger AG. The global supplier has completed a degree in the field of battery technology with Piëch Engineering AG. This is according to a statement from the company. As part of this agreement, ElringKlinger will develop and supply prototypes of a battery system for the Swiss-German manufacturer’s all-electric high-end sports car model. In addition to the pure battery modules, the battery systems also include the battery management system. With the development, delivery and test services, the project initially has a volume in the mid-single-digit million range and will begin at the end of this year.

“The order shows that ElringKlinger impresses with its innovation and performance in battery technology,” says Theo Becker, Chief Technology Officer at ElringKlinger AG. “Piëch places the highest demands on the all-electric drive of its vehicles, which we meet with our battery solutions. The first project steps are currently being implemented. The competence center in Neuffen offers excellent conditions for the project.

According to ElringKlinger, Piëch’s battery concept is based on a pack with more than 400 pouch cells which, in combination with the control unit, form the core of the system. The technical highlight of the concept is the voltage switch from 800 to 400 volts. This makes it possible for charging to take place using 800 volt technology while driving is based on a voltage of 400 volts. In addition, the innovative battery technology with a capacity of more than 70 kWh enables a range of 500 kilometers. High charging rates could also be achieved – 80 percent of the battery capacity would be reached in less than five minutes.

ElringKlinger has been developing and producing components for lithium-ion batteries for various hybrid and battery-electric vehicle models for over ten years. The know-how in the development and series production in battery technology includes battery systems, battery modules and components.

Piëch Automotive is a Swiss sports car manufacturer with a development center in Memmingen. The Piëch engineers rely on a flexible, modular concept for the vehicle architecture as the basis for further variants. The Piëch GT is to be launched in 2024 as the first vehicle in a product family of three models.

  1. That sounds very different than the first press releases about this miracle battery. Wasn’t that 180 kWh and a charging speed of 900 kW? Now that’s the battery of a mid-range cucumber..

  2. Interesting that at Piëch only for loading is switched from 400 to 800 V – people are obviously hoping for higher voltages no real benefit for driving (effort/costs?) .. 😛
