Hyundai is showing the first car on the newly developed electric car platform “E-GMP” – and is launching a new brand with the Ioniq 5.

DS, Cupra or Polestar: These days, car manufacturers no longer launch product lines, they just set up their own subsidiary brands.

So now also Hyundai. Under the name “Ioniq”, the Korean brand wants to launch electric cars in the future that were designed as such from the ground up; i.e. no e-cars that are based on a model with a conventional drive and have been converted for use as a battery car.

The first is the Ioniq 5, which should be on the road this summer. At 4.64 meters long, the mid-size crossover is similar in size to an Audi Q5, for example. But the three-meter wheelbase is almost 20 centimeters longer; Thanks to the electric drive with batteries installed flat in the floor, the wheels can be spaced far apart, and the overhangs are correspondingly short. Ultimately, the occupants benefit from this, as they enjoy significantly more space.

Ioniq5

The Ioniq 5 is available with rear-wheel drive or optionally with all-wheel drive. In addition, two battery options are planned: 58 or 72.6 kWh capacity are on the data sheet. The top model will offer a range of more than 470 kilometers according to WLTP measurements and will sprint to 100 km/h in a sporty 5.2 seconds. The entry-level model offers 231 hp and takes a maximum of 8.5 seconds to sprint to 100 km/h. In addition, trailer loads of up to 1600 kg should be possible.

A nice detail of the new E-model is the “Vehicle 2Load” function; The power from the battery can be used via a connection under the back seat to charge e-bikes or electric scooters – or simply as a mobile socket during a camping trip. Even more important, however, is that the current can flow quickly into the car battery when required. For this purpose, the Ioniq 5 is equipped with the still rare 800 volt technology. At a suitable charging station, the battery is charged from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes; electricity for a 100-kilometre journey is “filled up” in five minutes. This makes the crossover also suitable for longer journeys. The prices for the Ioniq 5 are not fixed yet; the smaller Hyundai Kona Electric currently starts at 42,900 francs.
