It is not easy for buyers of e-cars at the moment: when they have found a seller who actually wants to sell them an e-car (according to the last dealer test, this is not a matter of course!), they have to wait up to a year and a half for the object of desire. The lack of chips and the currently high demand for e-cars are to blame. According to an analysis by the magazine auto motor und sport MO/OVE, only six of the 30 most popular electric models in Germany can be delivered within three months. With the plug-in hybrids even only one.
On average, the buyer waits about five to six months for the new car, you need the most patience for the Audi Q4 e-tron (up to 15 months), the VW ID.3, the Mercedes EQC and the Dacia Spring (up to 10 months each). The ordered VW ID.4, Smart Fortwo or Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be delivered after about eight to nine months. If you can’t or don’t want to wait that long, we recommend the Tesla Models 3 and Y (one to three months), and you only have to wait three months for the Fiat 500e, Opel Corsa-e and Mokka-e and Polestar 2.
A lot is also demanded of plug-in hybrid buyers: 14 months delivery time for the Mercedes GLE 350e, 10 months for the A 250e. You have to wait between six and nine months for the Seat Leon 1.4 e-Hybrid, Cupra Formentor 1.4 d-Hybrid, VW Golf 1.4 eHybrid and VW Passat Variant GTE.
The authors of the study do not assume that waiting times will soon be reduced. The subsidies would further fuel demand, and “contrary to expectations, the production capacities in the chip area have not yet recovered,” says Marcus Kleinfeld, Managing Director at AlixPartners, dampening the expectation of a quick end to the supply crisis. This probably means that it will continue to be: Please wait, hold the line!
