DB Schenker orders 1st.500 Volta Zero-volta

As soon as the production vehicle of the Volta Truck was presented, further orders began to pour in. DB Schenker, one of the world’s leading logistics service providers and market leader in European overland transport, and Volta Trucks are entering into a close partnership, which will result in a pre-order of almost 1.500 all-electric Volta Zero vehicles. According to the companies, this is the most important order for large zero-emission trucks in Europe to date.

The Swedish start-up Volta Trucks presented its first all-electric truck in mid-July last year. Since then, the company has been gathering its first customers and is expanding its own e-offensive. At the beginning of November 2021, the production-ready design of the Volta Zero will be presented. Overall, the company is aiming for over 27 by 2025.000 electric vehicles on the road. In the meantime, the company had confirmed that it was examining the production of the Volta Zero in Spain. This has been abandoned and the Volta Zero is produced in Steyr, Austria. For this purpose, the cooperation with Steyr Automotive, formerly MAN Truck and Bus Austria, has been secured.

“I am delighted to welcome DB Schenker as a Volta Trucks customer. Working with DB Schenker on Europe’s largest order for fully electric trucks shows that the major logistics companies trust us to deliver a world-class zero-emission vehicle on time and of the highest possible quality.— Essa Al-Saleh, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks

As part of the partnership, DB Schenker will use the first prototypes of Volta Zero Trucks with customers under real sales conditions in spring and summer 2022. The findings from these tests are incorporated into the series production of 1.470 vehicles that will be built in the new Volta Trucks contract manufacturing facility in Steyr, Austria. In this context, Cyrille Bonjean, Executive Vice President Land Transport at DB Schenker in Europe, explains: “We have many challenges to overcome on the way to climate neutrality. The large-scale partnership with Volta Trucks enables us to enormously accelerate the electrification of our fleet and to invest in sustainable, more environmentally friendly transport solutions, which brings us significantly closer to our goal of climate-neutral logistics.”

It is planned that the fully electric 16-tonne Volta Zero will be used in the Ruhr area and in other European DB Schenker terminals, among other places, to transport goods from the distribution centers to inner cities and urban areas. This is where the innovative design of the vehicle, the safety-oriented driver’s cab to protect endangered road users and the emission-free drive unfold the greatest benefits. Initially, an introduction at 10 locations in 5 countries is planned.

As part of the partnership, the specifications of the previously announced 12-ton variant of the Volta-Zero will also be jointly developed. In addition, further drivers are to be trained and site inspections carried out in order to speed up the deployment of the vehicles.

  1. This is going to be really fun. According to the new government, Berlin is planning to close the city area for combustion engines from 2030. I am not at all sure whether there will be exceptions if a significant part of short-range traffic is electrically possible by then.
