Audi A3 40 TFSI e (2021): Plug-in version with 204 PS in a short test (abstract)-plug-in

From the Audi A3 e-tron introduced in November 2014, the A3 40 TFSI e become. The system output of 204 hp is still the same. But of course the A3 generation has changed. We tested the new version in the Ingolstadt area.

The drive is still based on the old 1.4 TFSI with 150 PS, plus the same electric motor with 80 kW (109 PS), which is integrated into the S-tronic transmission as before. However, a lot has happened with the battery, which is now supposed to provide 78 instead of 50 kilometers of electric range – according to the NEDC standard, mind you.

In practice I came exactly 40 kilometers – significantly less than the standard. Part of that is probably due to the winter temperatures. The propulsion is sufficient for my needs even in the 109 hp E-mode. This is probably due to the high torque of 330 Newton meters that come from the electric motor.

What remains of the A3 is the confusing number of modes: There are four hybrid modes, plus the normal drive-select driving modes and, to top it off, the two transmission modes (D and S). And as with the old A3 e-tron, the modes interlock.

Setting the hybrid modes using the "EV" button in the center console is also simple and user-friendly. What is unusual is that the charging port is on the front left. Charging is done with a maximum of 2.9 kW alternating current. That’s not a lot of charging power, but even so, the small battery is full again after four hours. Two charging cables are standard on board: the compact charging system (for connection to the Schuko socket or an industrial socket) and a yellow charging cable with type 2 plugs on both sides for the public charging station.

Regardless of the drive, the new A3 is a great car. It has large, brilliant displays and, in the driven version, it has good sports seats. The space in the rear is typical of the class, I have a few centimeters of space above my head and in front of my knees. The trunk is usable (apart from the bag with the charging cables). D.The volume of 280 to 1,100 liters, however, is significantly smaller than that of the conventional version (380 to 1,200 liters).

Conclusion: 9/10

Overall, I really liked the A3 with plug-in hybrid drive. Once again, I was impressed by the Audi displays, as well as the usability of the trunk and the fact that the electric drive is completely sufficient on its own. The achieved range, which was only about half as long as according to the NEDC, was less impressive.
