Driving is expensive. Not only does fuel cost money, but insurance, taxes and repairs as well. But there are ways in which you can earn money with your own car.

D.he car is idle most of the time – and still costs. Even if it doesn’t burn fuel, keepers have to pay taxes, insurance and inspections. But car owners can also earn some money with their vehicle. You won’t get rich from it, but a few hundred euros a year can come together.

One source of money is putting advertising on the car. According to ADAC, earnings are between five and 300 euros per month, depending on the size of the sticker and the client. Caution is advised with recruitment agencies: These pass on orders, but sometimes charge up to 150 euros for the necessary entry in their database.

In addition, some companies require memberships for two years, for which high fees are charged. "You should keep your hands off of such tempting offers," says Silvia Schattenkirchner, consumer advocate at ADAC.

According to the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center, employment contracts should be concluded for all transactions. Because basically the extra income with the advertising stickers is work in the form of advertising trips that comes about between a client and an employee.

Record the term, rights and obligations in the contract

"As with all contracts, you should watch out for hidden costs so that you don’t end up paying extra," says Schattenkirchner. As an example, she cites an actually inadmissible penalty fee that is incurred if the specified annual mileage is not achieved.

If the driver and the customer agree on size, shape and color, all that is missing is the sticker. It is best for the customer to order the sticker himself. This means that there is no trouble afterwards in the event of possible errors and the car owner is not left with the production costs.

The contract should specify the duration, rights and obligations, the content of the advertising and the earnings from the advertising trips. By the way, car owners don’t need to worry about later paint damage: Stickers can usually be peeled off without leaving any residue.

Additional earnings must be taxed

However, the advertising films have consequences for the tax return: The additional income must be taxed as income from self-employed work. “The provision of advertising space on private cars for a fee is generally subject to both income tax and sales tax,” says tax advisor Helmut Panzer from Tonisvorst near Dusseldorf.

In terms of income tax, however, the income is tax-free if it is less than 256 euros per year. In terms of sales tax, you may be able to benefit from the small business regulation.

No real additional income, but commuters who carpool with a colleague have an opportunity to save. In addition to the shared fuel costs, each occupant can claim their commute for tax purposes.

The flat rate is 30 cents per kilometer driven once, starting with the first kilometer – regardless of the means of transport and the route. However, the pick-up route to the passenger’s apartment does not count. The maximum amount is 4500 euros per year.

Without a transport ticket, there is a risk of a fine

However, taxi rides are not allowed. Anyone taking passengers for a fee needs a passenger transport ticket and a taxi license. If they are not available, there is a risk of a heavy fine and a complaint.

Car owners, on the other hand, can legally rent out their cars. On internet platforms such as,, or offer private individuals their vehicles for others. Registration is usually subject to a fee; a photo, technical data and the cost per kilometer describe the car. The agent receives a commission of around 15 percent of the rental fee paid.

Serious portals have their own insurance for the loan, which comes into effect in the event of a claim. However, the landlord is first liable for any damage caused by the tenant. That can be expensive – and exactly the opposite of what it should be: making money with the car.
