ADAC winter tires: Cheap winter tires mercilessly fail in the test-ADAC

In winter, winter tires are a must, even if you rarely ride snow-covered roads. Because the modern refrigeration specialists also impress on wet and dryocken road. However, this only applies to quality goods, cheap imported tires are sometimes catastrophic.

The quality level of winter tires has steadily improved in recent years, but by no means for all brands, as the ADAC found in the current winter tire test. Two out of three tires offer convincing performance, but cheap winter tire suppliers fail mercilessly.

E.Pleasing: Two out of three winter tires were classified as "particularly recommendable" or "recommendable" in the current ADAC test. "Motorists will find really good, winter-proof material in all price ranges", so the ADAC. The nine "not recommended" products, however, fall significantly in terms of performance and should not be used. Most of these are exotic products from the Far East or second and third brands from major manufacturers who want to be present on the cheap market.

A total of 34 winter tires in sizes 185/60 R14 T and 205/55 R16 H had to undergo tests by ADAC and Stiftung Warentest. The winter tires were examined on dry and wet roads, on snow and on ice. In addition, wear, fuel consumption and noise behavior were checked.

The Vredestein Snowtrac 3 is at the forefront of the narrower 185 tires, such as those mounted on small cars such as Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia. In addition, five other tires received the "particularly recommendable" award: the Fulda Montero 3, the WinterContact TS 800 from Continental, Bridgestone’s Blizzak LM 30, the Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ and the SP Winter Response from Dunlop.

The devalued Firestone Winterhawk 2 and Pneumant PN 150 Wintec failed because of their poor ratings on snow. The cheap tires Marangoni 4 Winter and Sava Eskimo S3, however, offered "catastrophic behavior in the wet", so the ADAC. And the Federal Himalaya WS-1 even failed in all test categories, apart from wear and tear – but what good is it if a particularly bad tire lasts particularly long?

For 205/55 R16 H tires, which are used, for example, in cars such as the Audi A4, the Mercedes C-Class and the VW Golf are used, the Continental WinterContact TS 830 was able to hold its own against 17 competitors. The Goodyear UltraGrip 7+, ESA-Tecar Super Grip 7, Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D and the Hankook Icebear W 440 were also rated “particularly recommended”.

There were only three failures in this group. Again there: the Firestone Winterhawk 2 with the worst snow rating in the test as well as from the cheap segment Goodride SW602 and Kenda Polar Trax (KR19). These were devalued because of the poor performance on wet roads.

Even if the cheap winter tires are consistently not recommended, buyers can save on buying winter tires. On the one hand, there are price comparisons on the Internet with an overview of winter tires , where the prices of the local dealers can be queried directly and immediately, on the other hand there are also tires with the grade "especially recommendable ”there are significant price differences from manufacturer to manufacturer.

The impressive tires in size 185/60 R14 T are already available from 46 euros, in size 205/55 R16 H the price range starts at around 70 euros.
