The Honda NSX is back: stronger, flatter and lighter than ever. The body is made of a new composite material. The hybrid technology leads to a huge boost in performance.

D.It’s been three years since Honda first showed the new NSX. It has long been clear that the NSX will be a hybrid car, there is a V6 twin turbo, installed in the center, plus three electric motors. It will have all-wheel drive, which is logical with so many electric motors. Shifting takes place via a dual clutch transmission with nine gears.

But even at the NAIAS in Detroit, where the Honda had its world premiere under the luxury label Acura, the Japanese did not want to give any further figures, no cubic capacity, no performance figures, no weight, no consumption. You don’t have to understand that, do you?

A few technical tidbits have already been announced, apart from the super gearbox with nine gears: dry sump lubrication, as it should be for a decent sports car. And the V6 twin turbo is designed at an angle of 75 degrees, as is common in racing.

The new NSX, which won’t be available until 2016, is based on an aluminum frame anchored on a carbon fiber floor; the body parts of the car produced in the USA are made of aluminum and a new, particularly light composite material called SMC. It is said to weigh only about 1400 kilos, despite hybrid technology. It is also equipped with well over 500 hp, due to hybrid technology.

And it’s compact too. Compared to the study, the NSX has grown a little, it is now 4.47 meters in length, 1.94 meters in width, 1.21 meters in height. It is hardly more expansive than the original Honda NSX, which was a wonderful vehicle, but unfortunately a bit underestimated in Europe.

One could argue about the design, but the technology was great with the aluminum body, the first rack and pinion power steering, the connecting rods made of titanium and spark plugs with platinum. The 3-liter V6 with its 270 hp at the beginning was a rotary horror and the driving behavior was not only generally acceptable. This should have improved significantly with the new model, also because there will be all imaginable electronic helpers.
