While the competition with the mid-range models is still waiting, the new 3 Series is now coming to dealers very fresh. Especially when it comes to drive, it shows youthful momentum.

D.But the BMW Active Hybrid 3 is not primarily about economy. Because with 340 hp, the hybrid version is the most powerful drive variant on offer, at least until the start of the top model M3.

The performance is made up of the power of the 306 hp six-cylinder turbo gasoline engine and the contribution of a 54 hp electric motor.

Together, the engines weigh up to 450 Nm on the crankshaft – more than in the eight-cylinder M3 of the previous generation. Nevertheless, the standard consumption of 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers should be 12.5 percent compared to the alternatively offered six-cylinder version BMW 335i without e-support.

The electric motor helps to accelerate

The low consumption results from an economical division of labor between the combustion engine and the electric motor. The latter is mainly used to help you accelerate. Over a distance of three to four kilometers, however, it can also take over the drive on its own up to a speed of 60 km / h.

A sailing mode also helps save: at a steady speed – for example on the motorway – the combustion engine decouples completely and leaves it to the electric drive to maintain the speed up to an upper limit of 160 km / h or even to generate electricity as a generator. The electric motor fulfills the same function when braking in all speed ranges.

Since the hybrid drive was taken into account in the entire development of the vehicle, it can be installed in a relatively space-saving manner. The electric motor is housed in the housing of the eight-speed automatic, the lithium-ion batteries are located under the trunk floor. Nevertheless, the load volume sinks by 90 to 390 liters. BMW has not yet announced prices, but at least 50,000 euros should already be incurred, the BMW 335i is available from 43,600 euros.

The competition is lagging behind by years

At first, the Active Hybrid 3 hardly needs to fear any direct competition. The Mercedes C-Class will have to do without the twin engine technology until the model change in 2013, while the new version of the Audi A4 is not due until 2014. And competitor Lexus is also currently doing without hybrid drive in its mid-range IS model.

The Swedish brand Volvo, on the other hand, plans to offer the Kombi V60 in a hybrid version in 2012, in which the batteries can also be charged at the socket using plug-in technology.

And outside of the premium league, the PSA Group will in future be offering several models with diesel hybrid drives, including the Peugeot 508 and the Citroen DS5. Both should consume little more than four liters of diesel with around 200 hp.
