The new E-Class will be the best business sedan
The new Mercedes E-Class will hit the market in April 2016, but a camouflaged prototype is already on the way in the Las Vegas area. For the first time, the sedan becomes undisguised …see it at the Detroit show in January
With the next E-Class, Mercedes will set completely new standards. Not only in terms of luxury, but also in terms of autonomous driving. The only question is why you should buy an S-Class then.
I.It won’t make its big appearance until January at the Detroit motor show, but the new Mercedes E-Class is already making a small guest appearance in Las Vegas. It is still camouflaged with the scribble foil of the Erlkonige, and that is why the Mercedes is so inconspicuous that it is difficult to see the longer wheelbase, the shorter overhangs and the roofline, which has moved closer to a coupe.
With such a prototype, chief engineer Michael Kelz rolls over the interstates and the desert slopes around the glittering metropolis and shines with his LED pixel light in the evening when entering the city with the neon signs on the strip.
The fact that the E-Class is warming up in Nevada of all places for the market launch in April is not only due to the fact that you are used to prototypes here and you would probably not even attract attention with a pink Ferrari in Las Vegas itself.
Pretty elegant, the C-Class Coupe
1 of 9
Like the sedan, the C-Class Coupe is optically based on the brand’s flagship: the S-Class.
2 of 9
Above all, the rear of the smallest coupe in the Mercedes range is reminiscent of that of its biggest brother.
3 of 9
Compared to its predecessor, the Coupe has grown by almost six centimeters in length and four centimeters in width. And if you put the coupe next to the sedan, …you can see that the two-door was lowered by 15 millimeters.

In the cockpit, the coupe is based heavily on its four-door counterpart. It is now even more comfortable for the driver and front passenger; however, more passengers should go where…They have to contort themselves quite a bit to climb into the rear.
5 of 9
The seats have been specially redesigned for the coupe; The seat belts that are automatically handed to the driver and front passenger are particularly luxurious.
6 of 9
The C-Class Coupe is equipped as standard with a collision warning system with automatic emergency braking. A cruise control with steering and traffic jam assistant can also be added…like a brake and a lane departure warning system. The car can also park automatically at the push of a button.
7 of 9
On request, there is a particularly stiff sports suspension, but also adaptive dampers and even air suspension. The driver can choose between five driving modes at the push of a button.

At the start there are four four-cylinder petrol engines with output values between 156 hp and 245 hp as well as two diesels with 170 hp and 204 hp, also both four-cylinder. In addition, should …the AMG variant with up to 510 hp will be offered.

The C 220d will also be more expensive (around 1000 euros), at least 39,568 euros must now be spent on the entry-level diesel.
Kelz flew his Erlkonige halfway around the world because the regulations for autonomous driving in the desert state are more permissive than in the rest of the world. And it is precisely in this discipline that Mercedes wants to set new standards with the E-Class.
Kelz has been sitting idly at the wheel for minutes while the drive pilot does the work. With a new generation of radar and camera sensors, it orientates itself even more thoroughly to lane markings and the vehicle in front, now also takes surprisingly sharp bends without steering intervention, now automatically adheres to the speed limit and even changes lanes on its own.
Kelz only has to tap the indicator once, then his prototype waits for a free space, pulls out and pulls past the car in front as if by itself. And as soon as the engineer turns on the indicator for the second time, the E-Class will get back on track at the next opportunity.
Autopilot works up to a speed of 210
Basically, Kelz would have read a book on the 300 miles from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, quickly worked out the model planning for station wagons, coupe and convertible as well as the Chinese long version of the E-Class or calculated again whether the new E. -Class can actually move in terms of price at the level of its predecessor, as the sales department promises – in any case, it hardly needs any more attention for driving.
But unfortunately everything that the E-Class can now do is not allowed even in Nevada, not to mention Germany. “That’s why we still have all sorts of information in the logbook and a sophisticated warning strategy so that the driver can take his hands on the steering wheel again,” says Kelz, while his arms have been in his lap for several minutes.
However, the Swabians have built in just as many tricks as you can prove your attention without actually grabbing the steering wheel. Because at least the first three or four warnings are acknowledged simply by swiping the new Blackberry buttons on the steering wheel – the Drive Pilot is satisfied and continues to do his job.

In addition, Mercedes designed the system in such a way that it can be adapted to the current legal situation at any time. The fact that the Drive Pilot now works from zero to 210 km / h, for example, and that it remains active for three seconds instead of the previous two seconds when standing still in a traffic jam, or that assisted overtaking works from 60 to 200 km / h was only decided a few weeks ago and was subsequently revealed the chips, doubled in computing power, are installed.
In addition to the assistance systems, which now not only brake for pedestrians, but also swerve, watch out for cross traffic at intersections and maneuver the car into parking spaces with the smartphone as a remote control, Mercedes also wants to set standards in networking. Indeed, incomprehensibly, navigation in the basic model still costs an extra charge.
But if you tick all the boxes, instead of the classic tubes you not only get a grandiose screen landscape with two 12.3-inch displays and graphics or camera images that are sharper than on a 4K television. For the first time, there is also a network with other vehicles.
Differences to the S-Class are becoming smaller
If the E-Class breaks down, it sends this to all other E-Classes in the area via a server and thus automatically warns you of the danger zone. This is to be gradually expanded, also activated for other vehicles and extended to other events from capricious weather to mobile construction sites. And even the ignition key becomes superfluous and can be transferred to the mobile phone as electronic access authorization.
As proud as the Swabians are of the new assistance systems and connectivity and as far as they have ventured into the future in the cockpit, the classic virtues of vehicle construction were also important to Chief Engineer Kelz.
“We wanted to make a big leap forward in terms of driving culture and smoothness in particular,” says the chief engineer. And although he is rolling over extremely rough US tarmac at a good 130 km / h, you can even hear him in a whisper. Because thanks to thick insulation and a lot of fine-tuning in the wind tunnel, the inside of the E-Class is no louder than the S-Class.

This was also the benchmark for the comfort of the new seats, which are slimmer but still more comfortable than in the predecessor and even offer more air conditioning and massage functions than the current flagship. The S-Class is bigger, a bit more spacious at the back and makes a bigger impression, especially on the outside – but at least in the first row the differences are melting away.
But Kelz made the greatest effort in spraying the properties so that the different model variants and driving programs also have a different character.
His 333 PS strong E 400 from the pre-series therefore floats most of the time as if on clouds over the highways, until Kelz switches to Sport + at some point, the business sedan tenses its muscles and takes a harder pace. At the latest then you will notice that the car has become 70 kilos lighter.
BMW brings new 5 Series in 2016
To please everyone is more difficult with the E-Class than with any other Mercedes model, says Kelz. Because from the sparsely motorized and sparsely equipped taxi model to the powerful AMG, no other model series has to cover such a range of demands and ambitions.
Kelz has planned a correspondingly large amount of variance: He not only selected two different steel springs and an air suspension and moved the driving programs further apart. There are wheels from 16 to 20 inches, manual or 9-speed automatic transmissions, rear or all-wheel drive and, in the medium term, soon a dozen engine variants.

The prices for the GLS have been increased slightly. For the cheapest model, the 350d 4matic, you now have to pay at least 74,800 euros.
It starts with an E 200 with 184 hp and a new, now cast aluminum and therefore 40 kilo lighter 2.0-liter diesel with 194 hp in the E 220d. But while the AMG will go up to around 600 hp, there is still a lot of room below. Even before the premiere, the Swabians want their plug-in hybrids to achieve a CO2 value of around 100 grams, which corresponds to a standard consumption of 3.9 liters.
On the one hand, Kelz can be proud of what is probably the best E-Class of all time. But the chief engineer knows that not only does it make friends internally, he often had to argue in order to get some extra things in front of the S-Class.
But the head of the series also knows that he will probably not keep the lead for long. Not so much because BMW will bring a new 5 Series next year and Audi will have the next A6 in two years. But above all, because the S-Class will also get a thorough update in 2017. Then the pecking order will be restored in Stuttgart.
