Abarth 595 Competizione: Like a squirrel that roars like a deer

This is how you really let it rip on Timmendorfer Strand

Fast, yellow, round, compact, personable – you couldn’t describe the Abarth 595 Competizione more succinctly. The small bullet is the ideal car for lovers of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

"This is not a Fiat, this is an Abarth," says my colleague Guido Bellberg, as if to explain to a visitor from Transnistria that a Le Timanoix with walnut liqueur is not a cheese in the traditional sense, but a French specialty. A Gouda is a cheese, just like an Edam or Emmentaler, but not a Le Timanoix!

All right then. An Abarth is not a Fiat, but it looks a lot like a Fiat 500; a Fiat that has been upgraded, refined and perfected. As if you had crossed a Dachshund with a Doberman and ended up with a Doberman in the shape of a Dachshund: compact, strong, belligerent. One look is enough and you know what’s inside the animal. A sheep in wolf’s clothing.

The success of the 500 is not just based on the Mini, on the revival of a legend. Those who drove the old 500 series 40 and more years ago drive Audi, BMW and Range Rover today. Fiat has succeeded in creating a classless car with the new 500, just like VW with the Beetle.

The Fiat 500 is a classless car today

A car that is practical and evokes feelings that are articulated in the word "kiss ball". The old 500 was the first Italian that young people and families could afford. Today one wonders how it was possible that two adults and two children fit into the tiny thing.

In comparison, the new 500 is a giant, you can get in and out without cracking your spine, and the rear seats are no longer used to torture users. The new 500 is the ideal city and short-haul car. Cheaper than a Smart and much more practical. More car for less money.

The Abarth, on the other hand, plays in a different league. It is the third and fourth car for people who already have an SUV from Audi, a Prius from Toyota and a convertible from Alfa Romeo. It’s the show-off car for people who want to show understatement.

The Abarth roars like a Maserati

And it’s actually fun to overtake a BMW on the autobahn that is running out of air on an incline while the little Abarth storms up like a mountain goat. Especially since the dwarf roars like a Maserati.

The Abarth people really went to great lengths to reproduce the engine noise. If you drive it in the city, passers-by wonder where the sound is coming from. It can’t be that a squirrel roars like a deer. Or is it??

There are cars that are bought for their looks. Others because of the performance, because of the resale value or because the neighbors have one too.

The Abarth, I’m sure, is the car for people who listen to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, because cannon shots are fired at the end.

The performance varies from 135 to 190 hp, the price from just under 18,000 to 50,000 euros. For that you would get a used Maserati that sounds like an Abarth. But you would also have so much fun?

  1. The 595 is also impressive with its two reverse gears. When looking for a parking space, instead of stepping on the brakes, which wears off the windows, you can immediately shift into second reverse gear at high speed. That will only be unfortunate if you get into first forward gear. Deer and gears roar mightily. &# 128514;&# 128661;

  2. Let’s be honest: which car offers the same aura and fun as the 595 for € 40,000? I do not know any.
    The 595 is for people who think a car is there to please its owner. For people who want to drive from A to B, there is a lot more to choose from;)
