The Porsche 911 also enjoys its cult status because it is so versatile. It has continued to develop over the years and has also adapted to a wide variety of customer requirements.
That’s how it is “911” now available in a unique variety. From the high-performance Gran Tourismo in the form of the 911 Turbo to the racetrack-optimized GT models and the convertible models.
The safety convertible
The 911 Targa fits in between the coupe and the cabriolet. When it was launched in 1965, it was the first convertible with a roll bar. The “Safety Cabriolet” should combine the protection of a solid roof with open driving fun. So Porsche also wanted to sell the open 911 in the USA, where convertibles were considered dangerous at the time. But the Targa developed more and more into a compromise between cabriolet and coupe, which it still wants to be today.
A matter of style
At first, the Targa was the only way to drive an open Porsche 911. As in a conventional convertible, the rear part of the roof was a foldable fabric top, and a hard top was clamped between the bracket and the A-pillar. For the 1970 model year, the rear window was made of glass, which noticeably improved comfort with the roof closed.

When the second generation of the 911 was introduced for the 1974 model year, the Porsche 911 continued to be offered exclusively as a coupe or as a targa. It was not until 1982 that the convertible was added as the third body variant. The greatest advantage of the Targa was its hardtop, which was far superior to the convertible tops of the time in terms of comfort. In the meantime, technology has made great progress in this regard. A modern fabric top, as is also used on the current 911, has hardly any disadvantages compared to a fixed roof in terms of tightness and insulation. And yet the Targa is still on sale – because the design with a fixed roll bar has found many fans.

While the drive is already known from the coupe and cabriolet, the roof mechanism was largely taken over from the predecessor. The rear window can be raised electrically, and the center section of the roof disappears at the push of a button within 19 seconds.
This impressive ballet of mechanics costs at least 158,600 francs for the 911 Targa 4 and 177,900 francs for the Targa 4S. The Targa models are just as expensive as the corresponding convertibles – and exactly 17,900 francs more expensive than the coupe.
