Porsche crowns the 911 anniversary with the most powerful turbo in its history. The new one can make the rear wheels crooked and has a 520 hp engine with an intake sound. It is also more economical.

D.The best for last: According to this motto, Porsche is now crowning the anniversary year of the 911 with the new turbo. Exactly 50 years after the premiere of the legendary sports car and 40 years after the debut of the first turbo with a spectacular 260 hp at the time, the Swabians will pull the cloth from the new flagship of the 911 series at the IAA in September and bring it to the fair immediately after the fair trade.

Because at prices of 162,055 euros for the normal Turbo and 195,256 euros for the Turbo S it may take a bit of financial preparation, let out the first details and photos now.

In these pictures you can see a turbo as one would have expected. Flat, long and, above all, incredibly wide, the Kraftmeier crouches on the road: the rear fenders have been tightened almost three centimeters, so that this coupe has the crispest downside in the family. In addition, the turbo is now on 20-inch models, which emphasize its power again.

What you can’t see are the technical tricks with which the developers want to turn the turbo into the king of curves. First and foremost, this is the rear-axle steering, which, following its niche debut in the civilized GT3 racing version, is now being offered to a wider audience for the first time.

Rear wheels twist

Because the rear wheels can be turned up to 2.8 degrees against the front wheels with it, the turbo works under 50 km / h as if someone had cut the wheelbase by 25 centimeters and milled accordingly tight around the hairpin bends. If you drive faster than 80 km / h, the rear wheels steer just like the front wheels. This means that the wheelbase feels even stretched by 50 centimeters and the car is even more stable on the road: length runs – after all, this wisdom does not only apply to boat builders.

Another new achievement is what Porsche calls the “active aerodynamic system”. In addition to the rear spoiler, which can be moved as always, with three stages, it consists of a front lip that is unique to date, the three segments of which are gradually inflated with compressed air. In combination, this optionally minimizes air resistance and thus enables maximum speed.

Or it increases the contact pressure and with it the cornering speeds. It works, promises Porsche and ascribes two seconds saved on the Nordschleife to this technology alone. Overall, however, there are significantly more: Instead of the last 7:40 minutes, the new Turbo should make the lap through the Eifel in less than seven minutes and 30 seconds.

Engine with intake sound

Of course, that doesn’t work without the appropriate drive: that’s why there is a 3.8 liter boxer engine in the rear, which – nomen es omen – is ventilated by a turbo. The double charger with variable turbine geometry, the intake sound of which is transmitted directly into the interior via a membrane, gets 520 hp from the six-cylinder in the basic model and even 560 hp in the Turbo S. Together with the standard all-wheel drive and the obligatory double clutch, this is sufficient in the best case for a sprint value of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 318 km / h.

But Porsche not only promises new reference values ​​for dynamics, but also wants to set new records in terms of fuel consumption: Thanks to lightweight construction, automatic start-stop and new thermal management, the turbo is up to 16 percent more economical and both variants are satisfied with 9.7 liters.

The new Turbo is certainly the most spectacular model in the Elfer family and therefore the perfect cherry on the Frankfurt birthday cake. But anyone who knows the Swabians’ marketing skills knows that it does not mark the end of the current 911. The new Targa will therefore continue by next spring at the latest.
