The new large fabric roof convertible from Munich offers luxury and performance in abundance. And gets by with less fuel.

W.hen motorists in Germany are preparing for winter, spring is already beginning at BMW. The Munich-based company is currently preparing the generation change of the six and this time starting with the convertible.

BMW will be presenting the open four-seater at the Detroit trade fair in January, and the car will go on sale here at the end of March. Prices climb by around five percent and start at 83,300 euros. On the other hand, the new model is not only a little larger and incomparably more elegant, it also has more power, consumes less fuel and offers more features. These include xenon headlights, electric seats with leather upholstery and the two-zone automatic air conditioning, which are part of the standard equipment.

The six is constructed from the same kit from which BMW has already assembled the sevens and fives. It also has an active chassis with variable dampers, comfort and sport modes, and if required, offers active steering with course correction on the rear axle, electromechanical power steering and the modern eight-speed automatic for greater fun on bends.

In addition to the well-known head-up display, the six can also be ordered with traffic sign recognition, night vision system, automatic parking assistant and a dozen other electronic helpers.

The engines are also well known. At the top is the 4.4-liter V8 engine with 407 hp for 94,300 euros in the 650i. With a maximum of 600 Newton meters, it accelerates the 2 + 2-seater to 100 km / h in 5.0 seconds and makes the top speed of 250 km / h a purely formality. It consumes an average of 10.7 liters (according to BMW data) and is two tenths more economical than before.

If you have to pay attention to the purchase price and want to save at the gas station, BMW offers a three-liter in-line six-cylinder with 320 hp in the 640i. The charged direct injection gasoline engine reaches a maximum of 450 Nm and is hardly slower with a sprint value of 5.7 seconds. And that it also reaches the 250 km / h mark is almost a matter of course for the Bavarians. The surprise, however, follows when looking at the on-board computer: Because they are now installing an automatic start-stop system in this engine for the first time, its consumption drops to 7.9 liters.

With all the same parts policy, the six goes its own way, at least stylistically: It is seven centimeters longer than its predecessor, four centimeters wider, but one centimeter flatter. It now looks even sportier than before and is literally pushing forward with its new front. Nevertheless, it doesn’t look as provocative as before and will therefore probably be of interest to different groups of buyers.

With the roof, however, the six-person designers have retained their stubbornness: As with the predecessor, there is a fabric top with the characteristic fins that tap out to the rear. Fully electrically controlled, of course, the hood disappears at the push of a button in a box in the trunk, the volume of which melts from 350 to 300 liters. But even that is enough to accommodate the two golf bags that are almost mandatory at BMW.

Inside, too, the designers emancipate themselves a little from the usual conventions. The first glance at the landscape of lacquer and leather looks familiar. But you quickly discover a few new, effective details. The center console, for example, is divided by a finely curved line and puts the driver back at the center of the action. And next to the cockpit, the unadorned built-in monitor gives way to an elegant flat screen in a chrome frame, which would almost pass as an automobile iPad.
